NTNU – Innovation and Creativity
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim represents academic
eminence in technology and the natural sciences as well as in other academic disciplines ranging from the
social sciences, the arts, medicine, and architecture to fine arts. Cross-disciplinary cooperation results in
innovative breakthroughs and creative solutions with far-reaching social and economic impact.
Paper and Fibre Research Institute (PFI AS) is an independent research institute localized in
Trondheim, Norway. Our research is focused on the use of wood fibres for production of paper,
packaging, new materials and biofuel. We have extensive international cooperation, and together with our
Swedish majority owner STFI-Packforsk AB, we constitute a world leading research institute in fibre and
paper technology. PFI is located at the campus of NTNU and the SINTEF group (The Foundation for
Scientific and Industrial Research at NTNU), the largest independent research organization in
Scandinavia.

Coating, barrier and adhesive solutions for the coming packaging
NTNU, Department of Chemical Engineering together with PFI and SINTEF are looking for two
PhD students within the Sustain Barrier project. The recently started research project “Fiber
based packaging materials: Development of innovative and sustainable barrier concepts (Sustain
Barrier)” aims at establishing fundamental knowledge about the interactions between wood fibre
structures and novel hybrid polymeric materials. The project is managed by PFI AS, carried out
in close collaboration with leading research and industry partners and is financed by the Research
Council of Norway, Dynea, Södra Cell, Peterson Linerboard, Elopak and Korsnäs Frövi. The
PhD positions will constitute central parts of the project.
Both PhD positions will be a part of an interdisciplinary research group and benefit from the
expertise of PFI, NTNU and SINTEF. Your main supervisor will be Professor Øyvind Gregersen
at Department of Chemical Engineering, Pulp and Paper Group, NTNU.
PhD 1 will be focusing on adhesive properties of inorganic-organic hybrid polymers in coating
and tie-layer compositions for packaging applications. This PhD will be carried out in close
cooperation with Dynea and parts of the PhD-study may be performed at Dynea in Lillestrøm and
SINTEF in Oslo. We are looking for a candidate who has completed the master degree or an
equivalent education. Your preferred background is within chemistry. Specialisation in fields like
surface chemistry and/or physical chemistry would be an advantage. However, other formal
backgrounds will also be considered. The PhD position should start during autumn 2008.
PhD 2 will be focusing on modification of cellulose microfibrills to obtain sustainable barrier for
packaging applications. One of your co-supervisors will be Professor Thomas Heinze at
University of Jena. We are looking for a candidate who has completed the master degree or an
equivalent education. Your preferred background is within organic chemistry, surface chemistry,
chemical process technology or fibre and paper technology. However, other formal backgrounds
will also be considered. The PhD position should start during autumn 2008.
The PhD scholarship is for a period of 3 years or 3 years and 9 months including 20 % teaching
duties. The appointment of the PhD fellow will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for
universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university
employees.
Applicants are obliged to engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment
requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study.
