2009 “Design the Future” Award for International Students of Keio University

Award Application Information

1. Eligibility for Applicants
Applicants to a Master’s program at one of Keio University’s Graduate schools or the Doctoral program at the
Graduate School of Medicine for the 2009 academic year admission (Spring or Fall) are eligible to apply for this Award. Students who will be receiving other scholarships are not eligible.

2. Scholarship Benefits
?Full tuition and related fees at Keio University
?A monthly stipend of JPY 200,000
?A travel subsidy of JPY 150,000

3. Duration of Scholarship
The maximum of two years.
*The Scholarship period may be shorter than two years if the student obtains a degree earlier.

4. Number of Recipients
Five awards given each year

5. Application Documents and Deadline
Students must submit the prescribed scholarship application form to a Graduate School along with the application
documents for admission. Further information is available on the Scholarship Office website. Application
materials submitted to the Graduate School may also be used for Scholarship screening. Submitted documents will
not be returned.

6. The Selection Process
Each Graduate School performs a primary screening of applicants and nominates candidates to the Scholarship
Committee. This committee then conducts a review of documents and conducts interviews for the final selection.
Interview will be scheduled between late February and early March, 2009. Detailed information will be sent to
each applicant nominated for the Award.

7. Interview
Applicants can choose Japanese or English as a language for the interview. If an applicant resides outside of Japan,an internet-based interview will be conducted by using Skype or Polycom. It is the responsibility of the applicant to prepare Web-camera and microphone necessary for such an interview. Prior to the formal interview a
connection test will be conducted.

8. Scholarship Announcement
The Scholarship Office will notify the selection results to all the applicants interviewed.

9. Monthly Scholarship
The monthly stipend is provided up on confirmation of enrollment. Each month, recipients must sign-up for the
monthly stipend at a relevant Office at Keio.

10. Notification of Changes in Registration Status
Recipients must notify the Scholarship Office when changes, such as those stated below, occur:
?. Temporary leave, absence, or withdrawal from a Graduate School.
?. Suspension from school or any other form of formal punishment given by a Graduate School.
?. Change of name, address, or other personal information of a student.

11. Scholarship Suspension
A Scholarship can be suspended when the Scholarship Committee judges that
?. a student cannot continue academic work due to suspension from school or any other personal reasons.
?. a student fails to achieve satisfactory academic results or behaves in an inappropriate manner.

12. Scholarship Restoration
If a student is subsequently reinstated by a Graduate school, then Scholarship support may be reinstated.

13. Return of Scholarship Support
In the cases indicated below, a student can become ineligible for Scholarship support when the Scholarship
Committee judges this to be necessary and the student may have to return the scholarship or portion of the
scholarship.
?. If a student fails to demonstrate potential for academic progress
?. If a student fails to achieve satisfactory academic progress or behaves in an inappropriate manner
?. If a student loses official student status at Keio
?. If the Scholarship Committee judges that a student no longer meets the eligibility criteria as stated in item 1.
?. If the Scholarship Committee judges that providing the Award to a student is not appropriate
