2009 Graduate Research Assistantships at STScI

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) invites applications from advanced graduate students to pursue PhD thesis research with members of the STScI scientific staff. The research at STScI includes a wide range of theoretical, observational, and instrumental topics. The students who participate in this program normally spend 1-3 years at STScI; however, proposals for shorter visits may also be considered. Students in this program are expected to remain enrolled in the graduate program at their home universities. A stipend of approximately $25,000 per year (depending on qualifications) is provided by STScI. Some support for tuition is also available if required.

Students from both U.S. and foreign universities are eligible to apply. Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent), must have completed all required graduate course work, and must have been admitted to the PhD program at their home universities. Interested students are encouraged to contact potential supervisors on the STScI scientific staff to discuss possible research projects (either before or after submitting their applications). Other enquiries about this program may be directed to Dr. Ron Allen (410-338-4574, rjallen@stsci.edu).

Applications should include three copies each of the following material: a signed cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests, and a letter from the official advisor or departmental chairperson giving permission to work at STScI. These should be sent by regular mail to Dr. Ron Allen, Head, Graduate Student Program, Space Telescope Science Institute, 3700 San Martin Drive, Baltimore MD, 21218. Applicants should also arrange for their academic transcripts and three letters of recommendation to be sent to the same address.

Applications and letters of reference received before 2009 March 30 will receive full consideration. Awards are expected to be made by April 30, and assistantships normally begin in September.

The Space Telescope Science Institute is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, and is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer. Women and members of minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply. EOE/AA/M/F/D/V
