2009 Malmberg Scholarship for Study in Sweden Guidelines
The Malmberg Scholarship will be awarded to financially assist up to one year of
proposed academic study in Sweden.

Background: The Malmberg Scholarship and Fellowship Program is supported by
earnings from the endowment established by a generous contribution to the
American Swedish Institute (ASI) from Cornelia Malmberg. Cornelia Malmberg was
a lifelong educator who spent time abroad teaching. A native of Winthrop,
Minnesota, Cornelia Malmberg took great interest in the work of ASI after her
retirement. Her particular areas of interest were educating youth about Sweden,
particularly the Swedish language.

Annual Timeline:
Summer-Fall: Scholarship and Fellowship publicized
September 1: Applications accepted
November 15: Application deadline
Nov.- Dec.: Applications reviewed and finalists interviewed by phone
January 15: Recipients of Scholarship and Fellowship announced
April or May: Malmberg Banquet at ASI to honor recipients

The project schedule must fall between the dates of June 1, 2009, and August 31,
2010. Project duration depends on the individual proposal (see application).

Eligibility: Applicants for the Malmberg Scholarship for Study in Sweden must be a
U.S. resident who is either (a) a student enrolled in a degree-granting program at an
accredited college or university, or (b) a qualified scholar engaged in study or
research whose work can be enhanced by study in Sweden.

Awards: Scholarships are usually granted for a full academic year term (nine
months), but can also be awarded for study periods of shorter duration. Both the
Malmberg Scholarship and the Malmberg Fellowship (see separate description) are
awarded at an annual presentation and banquet event to honor present and past
recipients and featuring a notable honored speaker. The awards are administered by
the American Swedish Institute.
