2009 Malmberg Scholarship for Study in Sweden Guidelines
The Malmberg Scholarship will be awarded to financially assist up to one year of
proposed academic study in Sweden.
Background: The Malmberg Scholarship and Fellowship Program is supported by
earnings from the endowment established by a generous contribution to the
American Swedish Institute (ASI) from Cornelia Malmberg. Cornelia Malmberg was
a lifelong educator who spent time abroad teaching. A native of Winthrop,
Minnesota, Cornelia Malmberg took great interest in the work of ASI after her
retirement. Her particular areas of interest were educating youth about Sweden,
particularly the Swedish language.
Annual Timeline:
Summer-Fall: Scholarship and Fellowship publicized
September 1: Applications accepted
November 15: Application deadline
Nov.- Dec.: Applications reviewed and finalists interviewed by phone
January 15: Recipients of Scholarship and Fellowship announced
April or May: Malmberg Banquet at ASI to honor recipients
The project schedule must fall between the dates of June 1, 2009, and August 31,
2010. Project duration depends on the individual proposal (see application).
Eligibility: Applicants for the Malmberg Scholarship for Study in Sweden must be a
U.S. resident who is either (a) a student enrolled in a degree-granting program at an
accredited college or university, or (b) a qualified scholar engaged in study or
research whose work can be enhanced by study in Sweden.
Awards: Scholarships are usually granted for a full academic year term (nine
months), but can also be awarded for study periods of shorter duration. Both the
Malmberg Scholarship and the Malmberg Fellowship (see separate description) are
awarded at an annual presentation and banquet event to honor present and past
recipients and featuring a notable honored speaker. The awards are administered by
the American Swedish Institute.

3. WORK EXPERIENCE:
I. HCSP: Since December 19/2007 I am working as a Clinical Regional manager for the HIV/AIDS care and Support program (HCSP) jointly implemented by Management Science for Health (MSH), Intrahealth Ethiopia and SC US in Amhara region. I have the responsibility to plan, implement, Monitor and evaluate the progress of implementation. Clinical mentorship, supportive supervision, coordinating training on ART through IMAI/IMNCI approach including TB/HIV, HCT, PMTCT, and IP/PEP are my routine duties. Conducting multidisciplinary team meeting, catchments area meeting and program implementation review meeting with the responsible stake holders to strengthen the health network, referral system and quality of care are also my duties.
II. Intrahealth international:
• As a PMTCT/MNCH program Officer and,
• As a regional coordinator of the Comprehensive pediatric HIV care and support Project/ Case management on IMNCI including HIV /AIDS at Western Oromia and Binishangul Gumus Regions.
Needs assessment and site selection with the respective Regional health bureaus based on set criteria; Coordinate and provide training on PMTCT/IMNCI for health workers at the different entry units of the health facility, program implementation and follow up were my major responsibilities. I have given training for MOH health workers and health extension workers on PMTCT and IMNCI. We also do joint supportive supervision to reinforcement and strengthening the ANC/PMTCT service uptake, improve the quality of service and ensure sustainable supply of drugs and other logistics in the program implementation.
III. Save the Children UK For 1 year and 2 months (October/ 2005- November 30 2006)
From October 12/ 2005 to November/ 2006 I was working with Save the Children UK as a Stabilization center physician, project coordinator and Budget holder for the Community based therapeutic Care project (CTC) in Wag hamra Zone of Amhara region. I was responsible for:
1. Planning and project implementation of the project according to the Donor and Government agreement,
2. Line managing the project officers and logistic officer and subsequently the whole project staff,
3. Budget holder: Planning and mapping of the donor budget lines into SC UK’s field budgeting system, Authorization of expenditures according to their lines, Budget monitoring, Quarterly variance analysis and rephrasing according to the budget lines allowed by donor,
4. Reporting:- Narrative and financial reports to Donor (according to the donor requirement- monthly and terminal), Quarterly and terminal DPPC reports (Narrative, financial and plan versus actual achievement), monthly report to SC UK, UNICEF monthly statistical report,
5. Monthly Grant and area management meeting and quarterly regional meeting:- presenting the project activities, achievements, challenges, impacts.
IV. Finote Selam Hospital for 1 year and 1 month (June/2004 August/ 2005): in different departments both working and duty hours. Emergency and regular out patient evaluation, investigation, management and follow up with decision of admission or outpatient follow up. In patient, daily round, evaluation, decision on discharge and follow up.
I was serving as emergency obstetric physician in Finote Selam Hospital for 5 months in addition to the regular job I was doing. I was giving 24 hour service being consulted by Nurses and other physicians on duty. I gave tutorial for the staff in my hospital on the important Infection Prevention and about the implementation and practice. I have been co-coordinating and supervising the implementation and practice of IP in the Hospital.
