The Department of Mathematical Sciences announces 1 PhD research fellowship position. The position is within the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

PhD research fellowship positions are research training positions, offering promising students an opportunity of academic development. The Department conducts research within the areas of algebra, geometry/topology, mathematical analysis, numerical analysis and statistics. A sizable part of the research is done in cooperation with other disciplines, both within NTNU and with research facilities in industry and other external institutions. We are looking for the best candidates, and put no further restrictions on the field of specialization than it must be within one of the Department’s areas of activity. In its final assessment the Department will make strategic considerations.

The PhD fellow will be attached to the Department of Mathematical Sciences, NTNU, and have his/her workplace there. The Department has about 55 PhD students today. PhD fellows mastering a Scandinavian language are normally employed for 4 years, 25 % of which goes into mandatory work for the Department. The mandatory work consists primarily of teaching, or work related to teaching, the larger part of which is done during the first half of the employment period. PhD fellows who do not have command of a Scandinavian language are initially offered employment for 3 years. The employment period may be extended by 6 to 12 months, in exchange for a period of teaching or teaching related work of the same length.

Candidates must have completed a master degree, or equivalent, within one of the Department’s areas of activity (mathematics, numerics, statistics) before employment can take place, and must fulfill the requirements for doctoral studies at NTNU (see http://www.ime.ntnu.no/english/research/phd).

The PhD research fellowship position is placed in salary code 1017, salary level 45 in the national salary scheme, gross NOK 353 000 per annum of which 2 % is deducted for State Pension scheme.  The appointment will be made in accordance with current regulations with supplementary rules for research fellowship appointments in universities and polytechnics. Applicants must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment. The successful applicant must agree to the conditions laid down for public employees.

Candidates will be required to enroll in a PhD program within the period of employment, and must sign a contract regulating the starting date and duration of employment as well as the mandatory work.

According to Norwegian policies, the government workforce should, as closely as possible, reflect the diversity of the population at large. It is therefore a goal of NTNU, as a government institution, to have a workforce which is balanced with respect to age and gender, and to recruit persons of immigrant background. Persons of immigrant background are encouraged to apply. NTNU also wishes to increase the number of women on its workforce, and women are specifically encouraged to apply.

Relevant scientific works should be submitted in triplicate. Joint works will be taken into account. In cases where it is difficult to determine the applicant’s contribution, a short note of explanation should be supplied.
