2009 Scholarship Programme for African Students – UK and South Africa
Graça Machel Scholarship Programme Application Information: The key aim of the Graça Machel Scholarship Programme is to help provide the female human resources necessary for economic, social and cultural development in the southern African region and to develop an educated and skilled workforce that can benefit the wider community. Scholarships that target women have long been recognized as an effective approach in addressing gender equality and eradicating poverty. By providing opportunities to study at postgraduate level, these scholarships aim to empower women and to equip them to take up leadership positions in order to have a direct impact in the communities, nations and region in which they live. Following in the footsteps of Graça Machel, these female scholars will be positive role models for other women.
The Graça Machel Scholarship Programme will provide a minimum of 60 postgraduate scholarships to female students from Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe in both South Africa and the UK. The majority of the scholarships will be for study in South Africa.
One of the key concerns of Mrs Machel is giving a voice to rural women and the scholarship is therefore aimed at empowering rural women. The Graça Machel scholarship is for women who have experienced significant struggle in their life and who have sought to overcome those barriers, be they related to gender, disability, poverty, age or racial discrimination. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate clearly how their application fits within this vision of empowerment.
Postgraduate Study: All scholarships are for postgraduate study, either for one academic year if based in the UK or for two years if based in South Africa. The scholarship includes payment of a maintenance allowance, travel, health insurance and tuition fees.
Candidates: Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to women on the basis of academic/professional merit, financial need, intended academic programme, leadership potential and commitment to work for constructive change in Africa. Applicants must have at least two years’ relevant work experience.

Application Process: The application form is of primary importance as the main assessment is made on the basis of the completed application form. If necessary, interviews will also be conducted. The following documents must be sent with all applications:
• Certified copy of undergraduate degree certificate plus university academic transcript
• One passport size photo with the applicant’s name clearly written on the back
• One academic reference in sealed envelope
• One employment reference in sealed envelope

• 10th August for study in South Africa
(Courses starting in February): we will notify you by 30th November if you have been successful
• 10th December for study in the UK
(Courses starting in September/October) Application forms for study in the UK will be available in September. We will notify you by 30th June if you have been successful.

But I used to get almost most of the imformation were for post graduates, and one of the unpleasant thing is; there were not applications for west African students from countries like nigeria and others, and south African’s were applicable in almost every where arround the world. However, after said and done, the whole world preach gendar equality, and some good people come up with thier money to assist in area of scholarships, I am very happy for this because the most problem we have in societies these days are moral problems, the decadance of morals and values.
But then the women have the answers in areas of home educations to children, so I really wish that , African should be favoured greatly. But , what discourages me when I glance at the edges of the papers and coners of the internet, is that places of most importance are not even mentioned. countries like , Burkina Faso, Somalia,Niger and some few very poor countries.
the women in these areas should be offered these scholarships, they need it more,
there are new programes and activities of the SSPA Association geared towards the women Empowerment Initiatives in place for the numerous young girls , traficked for prostitution, that need be rehabilitated and empowered to become useful to their self..
there is principal idea of scholarships that would be very helpful to train the many converted young girls and women eragerly yarning to go back to school to obtain their diploma courses first then their various Bachelors, this will really help the many women down here in Burkina faso, that stop schooling because of few dollars to pay for school fees that parent did not have, then instead the young girls go to early marriages with not a single educational background or little eduction.

Besibe this, the majior and most important thing which is responsible for infulencing my interst to up gread my knowlage with economics fild of study is that: the currentily financial crises of the world which leads millions of peoples in many country jobless( unemployed) and reduction for the capacity of many industries in different part of the world. Apart from these the financial criss creat great political,economic and social instabilty in many developing countries. For example, the financial criss leads the south east African countries ( specially in Zimbabwe) creat great economic problem. This leads to political shock in the specifide country. The problem of financial criss is also significant in my home land (Ethiopa), it makes the weak economy of the country to grow at very low rate than the pervious years. It affects also the performance of the banks and creat problem in the employment condtion.
In line with this in the future with cooporatioon with other economists I am try to protect my country as well as the globe from this type of problem as per my capacity is allow. Inorder to make my current dream real in the future, first of all I have a good knowalge with concernd fild of study. Because of this I would like to upgread my knowlage of economics by learing more about montary economics in my MA program.
The other thing which infulence me for masters program in economics is the continous problem that my world face due to graet industyralization and lack of knowlage about natural resource and environment positive conterbution for human life. The problem of global warming which spread and makes many part of the world to become desert during tthe past 20-28 years has great impact in many countries. Spercial the problem is severy in countries whose economy is highly depend up on the agricultural sector. Besaid this, the increase of world temperature by creating melting of the ice produce siginficant challege in many ice land countries and this problem will continue if effective measures are not taken at world level. As I am one of the member of the globe and one of the responsible body to protect the environment of ttis world in sustanabile and sutabile manner and to make it a place where ever humna beings as well as other animal speious to live in peace ful way I have to work hard to protect my environmentas per my knowlage. But to have a good knowlage with natural resouce and environment I have to upgread my knowlage with this course. Because of this I would like to make masters degree with natural resource and environmenatl economics. Inorder to do this I am intersted to have scholaship in abroad.
Other tthan the above mentiond things which infulence me to have scholarship, the great attitude to have masters degree in development economics which study about the problem of developing countries. As I am from one of the developing country of the world I want to know about different factors which hinders the development process of my country as well as other developing countries and to provide them the best way in which development will be acclerated.
Finally, my interst to apply for this scholarship postion is due to the lack of best opportunity in home country to get higher education. This is special in 2nd and 3rd degree due to shortage of higher educational institutions.
