Eligibility:
-Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant Irish language discipline and substantial Irish language teaching experience
-Alternatively, the candidate may be an outstanding independent scholar or an authority in the Irish language
-Applicants must be able to demonstrate a record of scholarly and teaching in the Irish language and or Irish language studies
-A clear sense and or demonstration of leadership and
-An understanding of the Fulbright Program and the role and benefit of being a ‘Fulbrighter’
-Irish citizens who are resident on the island of Ireland
-Irish citizens who are ordinarily resident in other EU member states and who are not eligible to apply for a Fulbright award in their country of residence
-EU citizens who are ordinarily resident in Ireland.A person is deemed to be ordinarily resident in the State if s/he has been living here for the past three consecutive years
-A proven track record of working, publishing and lecturing in Irish be comfortable working and teaching in an Irish-language environment an impressive publication record and considerable teaching experience at undergraduate and graduate level
-All candidates must have competency in the Irish language.

Scholarship Description: With support from the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the National Lottery, the Fulbright Commission is accepting applications from Irish Language academics and professionals for a Fulbright Irish Language Scholar Award to teach and research at a recognised US higher education or cultural institution.Close to 60 US colleges and universities are teaching the Irish language and or have Irish language libraries and archive holdings and may be interested in hosting a Fulbright Irish Language Scholar to: assist with Irish language teaching provide curriculum development support research, catalogue and disseminate its Irish language resources for a period of 3 – 9 months during the 2013-2014 academic year.The scholar will be expected to seek his / her own affiliation with a US institution and propose Irish language teaching and or research activities for the duration of the grant period.

Value and Duration: The maximum grant offered by the Fulbright Commission will be €35,000 for a full academic year (9 months). The grant will be pro-rated for a candidate going for less than a full academic year. The Commission will consider offering 2 pro-rated grants for successful candidates who have secured affiliations of only 1 semester (3 – 5 months).
