Scholarship Description: The project has a highly interdisciplinary character by combining multiscale modelling and high-resolution imaging experiments. In the modelling part the PhD candidate will use analytical as well as computational techniques to analyse reaction-diffusion systems in complex morphologies. Thereby the role of the spatiotemporal organization of active molecules like enzymes and ion channels will be analysed. This will be complemented by experiments in collaboration with the Ellisman group and a long-term visit of the candidate at the NCMIR at University California San Diego where the student will learn how to perform high-resolution imaging experiments and the corresponding data analysis. Moreover, the candidate may also collaborate with the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle (USA) for additional data acquisition.
