Hungarian State Scholarships for Foreign Students & Lecturers in Hungary, 2017/18

The Hungarian Scholarship Board offers Hungarian state scholarships for foreign students and lecturers.These scholarships are awarded to conduct studies or research in Hungarian higher education institutions and research institutes in the academic year 2017/2018 and for summer university courses in the summer of 2017.

Bilateral state scholarships are based on scientific and educational cooperation agreements signed by the governments of two countries. Similarly to the foreign partner, the Hungarian side offers scholarships for foreign students, researchers or lecturers in higher education institutions or in scientific or art institutions.

Course Level: Scholarships are awarded to conduct studies or research in Hungarian higher education institutions and research institutes in the academic year 2017/2018 and for summer university courses in the summer of 2017.

Study Subject: Scholarships offered by the HSB allow for studies or research in any field of arts or sciences at an accredited Hungarian higher education institution or research institute to be determined in advance.

Scholarship Award: For semester/partial studies: Bachelor/Master/Doctoral partial/semester studies (3-10 months)

Bachelor and Master partial/semester studies: Stipend: 40 460 HUF/month/not covering the cost of living/ Accommodation: student hostel accommodation depending on the capacity of the university, paid by the scholarship-holder Doctoral partial/semester studies: Stipend: 140 000 HUF/month /not necessarily covering the cost of living/ Accommodation: student hostel accommodation depending on the capacity of the university, paid by the scholarship-holder.

For full degree studies: Bachelor and master studies:

Stipend: 40 460 HUF/month /not covering the cost of living/ Accommodation: student hostel accommodation depending on the capacity of the university, paid by the scholarship-holder Doctoral studies: Stipend: 140 000 HUF/ month /not covering the cost of living/ Accommodation: student hostel accommodation depending on the capacity of the university, paid by the scholarship-holder.

For research:  Postgraduate applicants: Stipend: 80 000 HUF/month Accommodation allowance: 70 000 HUF/month Postdoctoral applicants: Stipend: 120 000 HUF/month Accommodation allowance: 80 000 HUF/month

Scholarship can be taken in Hungary

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for scholarship:

For semester/partial studies: Bachelor/Master/Doctoral partial/semester studies (3-10 months) Applicants, as future ministerial scholarship holders for partial/semester bachelor, master and doctoral studies, can only apply for programs held in Hungarian language (except for art studies where studies in English is possible). The tuition fee is covered by the Hungarian state. Partial/semester bachelor or master studies (3-10 months) are available for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at (not Hungarian) higher education institutions. Primarily students majoring in Hungarian Language and Literature and students participating in a single track university programme (such as General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmaceutical Studies, Veterinary Studies, Architecture, Studies in Law, etc.). Students are required to have minimum two completed semesters at their home institutions. Partial/semester studies are available only for those who are enrolled in one of the higher education institutions of the partner relations. The enrolled status is necessary at the moment of application, as well. Partial/semester doctoral studies (1-10 months) are available for applicants who are enrolled in a PhD programme at an accredited higher education institution in a foreign country (not in Hungary). Students may apply only once within a course of studies (once during their bachelor studies, and once during their master’s).

For full degree studies: Applicants, as future ministerial scholarship holders for full degree bachelor, master and doctoral studies, can only apply for programs held in Hungarian language (except for art studies where studies in English is possible). In case of bachelor or master studies, applications may be submitted according to the conditions stipulated in the bilateral state agreement. A successful entrance exam at the receiving institution is a precondition to being granted by the scholarship. In case of doctoral studies: For applicants holding a master’s degree. A successful entrance exam at the Hungarian doctoral school is a precondition to being granted by the scholarship.

For research: For short-term research (3-29 days) applicants holding at least a master’s degree may apply. For long-term research (1-10 months) applicants holding at least a master’s degree may apply. (Doctoral students may not apply; they may apply for Partial studies.)

Nationality: Citizens of Albania, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Cyprus, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Korean Republic, Kuwait, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, The Netherlands, Norway, Republic of Chile, Republic of the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Romania, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States of America are eligible for these Hungarian government scholarships. Citizens of the following countries may only apply through their national scholarship offices, on the basis of bilateral agreements: Columbia, Yemen, Mongolia, Palestine and Vietnam.
