Eligibility: Applicants should have a very good degree in Science or Engineering, preferably in Biomedical Science and Engineering. Excellent experimental skills are essential, although training will be provided.
-Academic: equivalent of an undergraduate degree at minimum 2:1 level, or a Masters degree. Candidate must be enthusiastic and well-motivated to carry out a PhD. Strong interest and previous exposure to healthcare engineering is preferable.
-British (UK) and European (EU) citizens are eligible. Non-EU citizens are not eligible.

Scholarship Description: Ganoderma lucidum (GL), is a popular medicinal mushroom with a very long history, more recently, it has been used in the assistance of the treatment and prevention of recurrence of certain types cancers following surgery. Although beneficial effects have been reported, a common problem of herbal medicines, include that the active constituent ingredients are not well defined and the chemical compositions are in the complex mixtures. The aim of this project is to systematically investigate the preservation of the bioactive ingredients of GL products, development of a new generation GL product to maximize the bioactive components by an advanced encapsulation technique, establish a standard operation procedure to meet with the potential stringent clinical testing of a pharmacological agent, and evaluate the cellular response of cancer cells and determine their specificity to the GL products. The work will be in liaison with the industrial sponsor, with frequent discussions and will be presented at healthcare engineering conferences and  published in journal articles.

Duration of award(s): Stipend is offered for 3 years.

What does it Covers: £15,000 per annum.
