Scholarship Description: The UK water industry is responsible for the sustainable provision of safe drinking water and plays a major role in safe-guarding water sources for the protection of wildlife and human health through wastewater treatment which is predominantly facilitated through biological activated sludge plants (ASPs). The water industry treats around 10 billion litres of sewage every day. When it enters the wastewater treatment works (WwTWs), this water is contaminated with tens of thousands of chemicals, bulk organics and solids. Its treatment presents a huge challenge, exacerbated by the occurrence of previously undetected, often hazardous chemicals (HCs), also termed “emerging contaminants”, in wastewaters. It is apparent from the literature that some WwTWs do remove HCs compounds more effectively than others, but why this occurs is not yet fully understood.
