Applications are invited for two PhD scholarships related to the Danida financed project ‘Science and Power in Participatory Forestry’ (SCIFOR). Nepalese students are eligible for this studentship. Students will be enrolled at both the Tribhuvan University (Nepal) and University of Copenhagen (Denmark), with a possibility of attaining a double degree. The scholarships are of three years duration and come with a starting salary of NRS 55,000/month. Eligibility: Interested and qualified citizens of Nepal. (holding MSc degree or equivalent within of forestry, natural resources management and related fields)

Scholarship Description: The Institute of Forestry of the Tribhuvan University, in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen, Denmark hereby invites interested and qualified citizens of Nepal (holding MSc degree or equivalent within of forestry, natural resources management and related fields – but see the eligibility criteria in the Application guidelines) to submit applications for 2 PhD scholarships related to the Danida financed project ‘Science and Power in Participatory Forestry’ (SCIFOR). Students will be enrolled at both the Tribhuvan University and University of Copenhagen, with a possibility of attaining a double degree. The scholarships are of three years duration, and will commence on July 1, 2014. The PhD scholars will be supervised by a joint team of senior academics from the Institute of Forestry and University of Copenhagen, and will be provided PhD level training in both university environments. The PhD study and research will be closely integrated and coordinated with all the other activities in the SCIFOR project. The overall goal of SCIFOR is participatory forestry planning and management practices that support equitable, environmentally sound, and economically rational forest management. The project involves investigations of management planning practices and outcomes in Nepal’s community forests.

Number of award(s): Two scholarships will be offered.

Duration of award(s): The scholarships are of three years duration, and will commence on July 1, 2014.

What does it cover? The PhD scholarships come with a starting salary of NRS 55,000/month. There will be a budget for field related costs, for a pc, and for books and other research equipment, as well as for traveling, accommodation, and upkeep in connection to study stays at the University of Copenhagen.

Selection Criteria: Academic performance as indicated by
(i) a very good second university degree; and (ii) documented research achievements, e.g. publications in international journals with peer review or other indicators of intellectual potential, e.g. relevant working experience in (international) organizations with very competitive selection processes (40%).
- Research synopsis that closely relates to one of the research topics announced by the “Science and Power in Participatory Forestry (SCIFOR)” project and demonstrates insight and interest in the subject (40%). – Recommendations from the two academic references (20%).

Notification: Short-listed candidates will be invited to prepare a full research proposal and to present this at an interview session in late April 2014.
