Applications are invited for PhD studentships and postdoctoral positions in wet weather transportation studies. The studentships and postdoctoral positions are funded by the University and are part of a wider project involving development of predictive tools.
As part of the study, models of traffic performance under wet weather condition will be developed to obtain thresholds for the effects of wet climate on transportation systems. One of the key areas is the response distance and drivers’ maneuverability relative to extreme wet weather conditions and sudden reverse climate. The project will entail investigating records held by the Malaysia Meteorological Department to identify wet weather patterns that lead to drivers’ response time drop under Asiatic wet weather climate. This information will then be used to develop critical wet weather threshold models that can be incorporated in ‘NETMED’ time response predictive tool for assessing the impact of predicted wet climate change on surrounding network traffic flows. NETMED will develop a number of scenarios describing highway transportation system under wet weather conditions in the Malaysia and aims to determine the best travel path on the network that is most resilient to wet weather climate.
This exciting research opportunity is open to all. The research studentship will cover the cost of tuition fees with provision for minimum maintenance allowances for outstanding candidates. The postdoctoral positions are tied to government’s effort aimed at enhancing the quality of research to assist the industry especially in Science and Technology. This is in line with the 33rd Recommendation of the Industrial Technology Development Action Plan (PTPI’P). Postdoctoral positions attract fixed monthly allowance excluding travel costs to and from Malaysia. Successful candidates will be based formally at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia main campus in Skudai, Johor, Malaysia.
