3 PhD-student positions within the Focus Program Autoimmunity and the Cluster of Excellence Inflammation at the Interfaces
February 6, 20083 PhD-student positions within the Focus Program Autoimmunity (www.derma.mu-luebeck.de) and the Cluster of Excellence Inflammation at the Interfaces (www.inflammation-at-interfaces.de) for genetics, immune modulation and tissue damage of inflammatory skin disease – Medical Faculty, University of Lübeck, Germany (Departments of Anatomy and Dermatology; Chairs Prof. Westermann and Prof. Zilikens, respectively): To conduct: (1) Systematic genetic studies to discover susceptibility genes in immunobullous skin diseases. A large collection of patients with immunobullous diseases will be assembled for subsequent high density SNP association studies. In addition, studies will include the backcrossing of mice susceptible to induction of autoimmune blistering with those resistant to disease. (2) Evaluation of the relative contribution of leukocyte subsets to the generation of autoimmunity to type VII collagen. Work will include establishment of an adoptive transfer model of epidermoly!
sis bullosa acquisita (EBA). Using this model, the relative contribution of leukocyte subsets, namely, T- and B-lymphocytes, NK-cells and regulatory T-cells, will be investigated. (3) Detailed investigation of tissue damage in experimental EBA. Using the passive model of experimental EBA, the course of tissue damage will be morphologically characterized. Identified targets will be validated for their functional relevance using both the passive and active disease model of experimental EBA. Employment for all 3 positions is for 36 month. We are looking for candidates experienced in above fields of research. Successful applicants will be educated in the field of immunology in regular PhD-, Focus Program- and Cluster seminars. Imaging techniques (Anatomy) and animal models of autoimmune blistering skin diseases (Dermatology) will be an additional educational focus. If required, short to long term visits to collaborating scientists abroad will be offered. Please send your complete application by March 1st 2008 to Dr. Ralf Ludwig (ralf.ludwig@uk-sh.de).
