The Spemann Graduate School of Biology and Medicine (SGBM) is the only International Graduate School funded by the German Excellence Initiative of the DFG at the University of Freiburg. It relies on the expertise provided by the Excellence Cluster bioss (Center for Biological Signalling Studies), several outstanding collaborative research centers as well as the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience. This innovative research and training program includes an MD/PhD program.
Presently the school counts 60 PhD students at different stages of their doctoral work.
The entire program is run in English. Knowledge of German is not necessary.
We expect:

Well, to all people who are posting your comments as a reply to this scholarship.. I am currently doing my Masters in Molecular Biosciences in UK and have secured a funded PhD position in Netherlands to start in Sept 2009 in the field of Cardiovascular developement. I would like to tell all of you that these positions are very competetive and only the best candidates are picked for the interview. These are research oriented and demand previous experience in related fields. I was taken by surprise when I read comments from people who have art backgrounds. The field of medical research in the Europe is highly focussed and field specific. I would advice those from different bakgrounds to take up Masters first in Moleculat biology or Biomedicine ( if you really want o enter this field) and then look at PhD offers. For Tariq from Iraq and Kaushik from India, I encourage you to apply. You should demonstrate good academic record and also strong research skills. References are very important. Good Luck
