3-year PhD Studentship, Imperial College, London

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship based at the Department of Primary Care & Social Medicine at Imperial College, London. The anticipated start date is October 2008.

Project: The project involves an evaluation of population based systematic diabetic and cardiovascular risk screening and assessments in adults aged 35-74 years in Ealing Primary Care Trust. Six discrete activities will be performed by local GPs in accordance with guidance from the DH and the National Screening Committee:

1. Screening of all patients already on their disease registers (except those already on diabetic registers) for diabetes
2. Vascular risk screening of all adults aged 35-74 years in order to identify those with > 20% CVD risk within 10 years
3. Creation of a primary prevention register of people who have no disease but who are at greater than 20% risk of developing a cardiovascular event within 10 years
4. Creation of a register of people with impaired Glucose Tolerance Test (IGT Registers)
5. Referral of all those in category 3 & 4 above to Health Trainers for advise, support and sign posting to community based lifestyle/behaviour change activities
6. Prescription of statin therapy for all those at > 20% CVD risk

Research to be carried out by PhD Student:
1. Monitoring and evaluation of the (medium-long term) health outcomes in people with >20% CVD risk and IGT
2. The impact of community based activities (smoking cessation, physical activities, cookery clubs, weight management etc) on risk factor reduction and event rates

Students will be paid a tax-free stipend of £16,500 per year. Fees are only available to support Home or EU students.
