Job Description

Brief Description of Program:  The Victims of Violence program, located in the Adult Outpatient Division of The Cambridge Health Alliance’s Department of Psychiatry, offers comprehensive psychological services to adult victims of recent and/or prior crimes of physical and sexual violence.  The program also extends services to survivors of war-related political trauma, family and friends of victims, and community settings distressed by violent traumatic events.  The program is staffed by a multidisciplinary team who offer clinical training and supervision to advanced students in social work, psychology, nursing and psychiatry.  Program services include crisis intervention, individual and family evaluation, individual and group treatment, case consultation, research, psychological testing, and community crisis response services.

Fellowship Description:  This Advanced Social work Fellowship runs from September 2008-September 2009.  The VOV training experience involves the opportunity to both provide clinical services and receive advanced training opportunities.  Trainees are required to be available four days, including one evening, for a total of 24 hours.  Postgraduate trainees receive a stipend including health insurance and four weeks vacation.

Trainee Duties:  Clinical Responsibilities: Social work trainees in the VOV program conduct individual and as appropriate, family evaluations.  They also provide individual, group, and occasionally, family psychotherapy to patients referred to the VOV program and are responsible for approximately 2 hours per week involvement in short-term crisis intervention.  Trainees carry a caseload of approximately 2 ongoing evaluations, 4-5 ongoing treatment cases, 2-3 crisis cases and 1 group for an average of 12 hours per week of clinical activity.  At different points in the training year, clinical hours may range from 8-14.

Trainee Supervision:  Each social work trainee in the VOV Program receives 2 hours of individual supervision as well as group and crisis supervision.  All supervision is provided by senior staff.  Additional specialized supervision is arranged as needed.

Training Opportunities with the VOV Program

1)  Orientation: A three-day orientation to the program, which is required of all staff and trainees, is held the first or second week in September.

2)  VOV Team Meeting: Jayme Shorin, LICSW, Clinical Services Coordinator and Phillip Brown, LICSW lead this weekly meeting of students and staff.  During this meeting new evaluations of patients are begun, completed evaluations are presented, cases are reviewed, consultations are extended to clinicians outside of the program, and basic clinical teaching is conducted.  Team meeting is held Monday mornings and is required of all staff and trainees. Time is TBA.

3)  The Core Trauma Seminar: This is the basic seminar of the VOV program.  Senior program staff and outside speakers review theory, research, and treatment strategies relevant to the nature, etiology, and treatment of post-traumatic stress and related disorders.  The seminar meets weekly on Thursdays and it is required of all trainees. Time is TBA.

4)  Individual Clinical Supervision: Clinical trainees in the VOV program receive a minimum of 2 hours of weekly individual supervision.  Supervision is required of all trainees.

5)  Crisis Intervention Seminar/Supervision: All students meet weekly (time is TBA) as a group with Janet Yassen, LICSW, Coordinator of Crisis Services and Nalina Narain, Coordinator of the Victim Advocacy and Support Team.  The purpose of this seminar is to learn and practice the principle of crisis theory and interventions as it relates to victims of recent violence.  This meeting is required of all trainees.  In addition, trainees carrying particularly difficult individual or family crisis cases will receive additional supervision as needed.

6)  Group Therapy Seminar: The trainees will participate in a weekly hour-long seminar on Mondays time is TBA.  The primary focus will be on the theory and practice of trauma- informed group treatment.  The format will include assigned readings, role-plays, explorations into community group resources, and guest speakers.

7)  Group Therapy Observation: Meets 2 hours a week during the fall semester and is required of all trainees. Time is TBA.

8)  Professional Support Group: Trainees meet together for support around professional issues and training experiences.  Time is TBA.

9)  Outpatient Psychiatry Department Seminars: A wide variety of seminars are offered and encouraged, but not required.

Requirements/Qualifications

Fellowships are available to students who have completed an MSW from an accredited institution.

Salary Information: $15,600 for a 12-month training year, with a 4-week vacation.
