AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES (AAS) PROGRAM
Application Guidelines for AAS Scholarships
Deadline for Fall Applications: July 18, 2008
To qualify for an AAS scholarship, a student must satisfy the following criteria:
1. Must be enrolled in a fulltime
course of study (at least 12 hours) and must
have officially declared a major in African American Studies (Please refer to
AAS Student Handbook, p. 5 or go online
at www.uab.edu/african).
2. Must satisfy the prerequisite courses (EH 101EH
102) for the African American
Studies major before taking AAS 200: Introduction to African American Studies.
3. Must maintain an overall GPA of 2.7 or above, and a GPA in the African American
Studies major of 3.0 or above.
4. Must submit a cover letter of application verifying his/her need for financial aid, why
he/she has declared AAS as a major, and what he/she intends to accomplish with the
AAS major after graduation. In short, the cover letter would document the student’s
academic and professional goals. This cover letter must be typed, signed and dated.
6. Must include a threepaged,
typed, and doublespaced
original essay on one of the
following topics designated by the AAS program. The topic for the AY 20082009
scholarship competition is:
Discuss the connection between classroom performance (attendance, assignments,
tests, etc.), satisfying the degree requirements for graduation, and eventual
success in the work environment.
7. Must have an officially sealed copy of his/her current academic transcript mailed
directly to the AAS interim/director.
8. Must have at least two letters of recommendation mailed to the AAS interim/director.
One letter must be from a current teacher or professor who has actually taught the
student. The second letter should be from a supervisor, community leader, minister
OR other individual (not a family member or friend) who has personal knowledge of
the applicant’s background and credentials. All letters must be typed, signed, sealed,
and currently dated (Please see the scholarship application form on the second page of
these guidelines for the name and address of the current AAS interim/director).

There are no restrictions to applicants based on race, color, ethnicity, national origin,
disability, veteran status, gender, or sexual orientation.
