AHRC Doctoral Studentship in Archaeology
National Museums Liverpool
UK, England, Liverpool
Reference no: 2008-043
Salary £13,100
Fixed term contract for 36 months
Maintenance Grant: £13,100 per annum (plus payment of university tuition fees)
Following a successful bid to the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), we are pleased to announce a fully funded PhD studentship in the Antiquities Department at World Museum Liverpool.
Beginning in October 2008, and working in collaboration with the School of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology (SACE) at the University of Liverpool, the studentship will fund three years full-time study on a project to research The lost Hittite Gallery: John Garstang and Turkey
Through the documentation, analysis and publication of the Hittite collections of the World Museum Liverpool, the project will make an important contribution to analysing primary archaeological material and bringing it to the attention of a wider audience. The project will make significant contributions to the understanding of British perceptions of, and engagement with, the archaeology of ancient Anatolia during the time of the early Turkish Republic. The project will also contribute to wider contemporary discussions about Turkey’s relations with the West by providing an appreciation of one aspect of that relationship in a given historical timeframe. By bringing to public awareness the existence of the Hittite Gallery and the life of Liverpool University based archaeologist John Garstang, this project will also make a contribution to re-appraising the history of the City of Liverpool and its position as one of Britain’s leading cultural centres. The results of this project will also be of significance to those researching collecting habits, museology, and public engagement with museums in the early-to-mid 20th century.
You will normally have a first degree and MA in relevant discipline areas.
The successful candidate will have proven academic ability, suitable experience, and demonstrate potential to be a successful research academic or museum curator.
Because part of the first and much of the second year will be spent working in museum stores analysing material and learning curatorship, the successful candidate should have prior experience of dealing with material culture.
They should also have academic experience of the chronological periods and cultures concerned and demonstrate an awareness of the intellectual issues and controversies involved.
Other desirable qualities would be: an awareness of Anatolian archaeology, prior museum experience, or work with documentary or photographic archives.
Application will be by the submission of a CV (including a transcript of marks, where applicable) and letter of application.
For further details and information about how to apply, please email Dr Alan Greaves in SACE at the University of Liverpool using the contact form below.
