AHRC-funded Collaborative PhD Studentship:

Nottinghamshire County Council
Work and display at Rufford Abbey 1700-1920: reconnecting
archives with landscape, people, and place
Supervisors: Professor Charles Watkins and Dr Susanne Seymour
(University Of Nottingham); Linda Hardy (Rufford Abbey Country Park,
Nottinghamshire County Council)
This project will create a new cultural geography of Rufford Abbey by
reconnecting the archives with the landscape and those involved with its
creation and use. Rufford Abbey on the edge of Sherwood Forest is a very
popular Country Park owned and run by Nottinghamshire County Council.
It comprises the ruins of a Cistercian abbey and the remnants of a country
house and its gardens. These have been disconnected from the context of
the wider estate including 18,000 acres of agricultural land, heathland and
woodland in Sherwood Forest for seventy years.
The PhD Studentship will allow the landscape and history of Rufford to be
reconstructed drawing on the estate archives held at Nottinghamshire
Archives. In addition to a critical assessment of the design, representation
and use of the gardens, park, heathland and woods, particular emphasis
will be placed on those who built and maintained the gardens and
landscape including gardeners, forest workers, labourers, and other staff.
The project will investigate the representation of landscape alongside the
practices of landscaping and everyday landscape use.
Applicants should have a First Class or Upper Second Class degree in a
relevant discipline. A Masters degree (completed or in progress) would be
an advantage. The successful candidate will work within the Cultural and
Historical Research theme http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/geography/ in
the School of Geography, University of Nottingham and work closely with
Rufford Abbey Country Park and Nottinghamshire Archives.
The AHRC PhD Studentship covers University tuition fees and provides an
annual maintenance award of approximately £12,940 for three years. The
studentship is open to UK or EU citizens who have been resident in the UK
for the last 3 years, in line with Research Council requirements. For an
informal discussion about the position, please contact either Professor
Charles Watkins (charles.watkins@nottingham.ac.uk 0115 9515439) or Dr
Susanne Seymour (Susanne.seymour@nottingham.ac.uk 0115 9515453).
Applicants should send a copy of their curriculum vitae with the names
and addresses of two referees, together with a statement outlining their
academic interests and reasons for applying for this Studentship to Jenny
