Alternative applications of the quantum Hall effect
Description : The quantum Hall effect (QHE) is used to maintain the standard of the unit of electrical resistance. Alternative applications, e.g. for QH terahertz detectors, are conceivable. Here, the candidate should implement a standard for the unit A of the electrical current by feeding a QH sample with a voltage well defined by the Josephson effect. This way provides an alternative for the implementation of an A standard on the basis of single electron tunnelling and surface acoustic waves. As the latter two possibilities for a current standard are still not feasible due to various physical and technical problems, these problems may be circumvented by the approach proposed here. Prof. Dr. Georg Nachtwei You are required to hold an excellent university degree (master’s or equivalent degree) in physics, chemistry, electrical or mechanical engineering, mathematics, information technology or related fields. The entire program is run in English, so fluency in both written and spoken English is required. Skills in German are welcome. You may be a member of and receive a scholarship from the IGSM for up to 3 years. In your first semester, you will be accepted on a probationary basis.
