ABA San Diego provides a strong voice on business, cultural and political issues of interest to San Diego’s Asian & Pacific Islander community. Established in 1990, ABA facilitates the growth and development of member businesses through ongoing entrepreneurial education, communication and business networking programs. One of our major goals is to enable members to participate fully in the economic development of San Diego, without regard for race, color, creed or national origin.
A total of four scholarships will be awarded to high school and/or undergraduate students. (Note: High school students must be graduating in 2010.) Undergraduate students who are majoring in Public Administration, Political Science, Urban Studies, or Business Administration with a strong interest in government/public service will be eligible for the Thomas N. Fat Scholarship award.
Applicant Eligibility:
- Applicant shall be eligible under one or more of the following:
a) a high school student who will graduate in 2010; or
b) a community college or undergraduate college student.
c) Tom Fat Scholarship applicants must be undergraduate college students.
Applicant’s transcript must reflect a minimum of 3.5 grade point average.
Applicant must reside in San Diego Count.
Applicant must be a United States citizen or permanent resident. (Winners may be required to show proof of the above documentation.)
ABA Scholarship Guidelines:
A completed application will consist of the following:
a) Completed application form
b) Personal Statement
Personal statement should not to exceed 2 pages, 1.5 spaced and using 12 point Times New Roman font. All pages should include a page number and your name.
Please make sure to focus on the following questions in your Personal Statement:
- What in your life story makes you special, unique or impressive?
- What interests you about the field of work/study for which you are applying and how did you learn about it?
- What responsibilities have you undertaken?
- What difficulties have you overcome?
- Why should you be chosen above the other applicants?
- How have you benefited from preparing for college?
c) Sealed Official transcript confirming a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
Note: broken seals will nullify the validity of the transcripts.
d) Two (2) letters of reference. One from a teacher or counselor, and one from individuals who are familiar with your abilities. Reference letters must include addresses and phone numbers of persons providing the reference. Please have the letters be 1 page with 12-point font.
Family members and persons under 18 years of age are excluded
Scholarship recipients may elect to have scholarship awards paid directly to them, or to the appropriate educational institution. Proof of enrollment will be required before payment is made. A total of four (4) scholarships will be awarded.
Applications must be received in the office by 3:00 p.m. on October 1, 2010. All documentation must be mailed (postmarked) or hand delivered as follows:

Incomplete applications will cause the applicant to be disqualified.
- The ABA Scholarship Committee Judges, using a blind rating system, shall select the recipients of ABA scholarships. All decisions of the Committee Judges shall be final.
