Therapeutic potential of modulators of cannabinoid receptors in
cerebellar ataxias
Ataxia UK-funded PhD position (3 years)
Applications are invited for a fully funded, 3-year PhD position within a vibrant
and expanding research group in the School of Pharmacy, University of
Reading under the supervision of Dr Gary Stephens and Dr Ben Whalley.
The project will use in vitro electrophysiological techniques (including patch clamp and
multi-electrode recording) from native neurones in cerebellar brain slices. The project aims
to determine how modulation of cannabinoid receptors may ameliorate the progression of
ataxia, a neurodegenerative disease associated with motor deficits that currently has no
therapeutic treatment. The project will involve investigation of cannabinoid effects on
different ‘ataxic’ mice models.
Candidates should hold (or expect to gain) a 2(i) grade at BSc level in an appropriate
Biological Science (or closely related area). Prior laboratory experience is advantageous.
Interested researchers are invited to apply for this position that is available from 1st
October 2008 in the Faculty of Life Sciences, which consists of five schools, conducting cutting edge
research in cell signalling, pharmacology and pharmacy.
Starting salary will be at standard University of Reading stipend level.
