Australian Leadership Awards Scholarships
AusAID will accept ALA Scholarship applications for the 2010 academic year from March 19, 2009 until June 30, 2009.
The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) program aims to develop leadership, build partnerships and linkages within the Asia-Pacific, and address priority regional issues. The ALA program is comprised of Scholarships and Fellowships. Awardees are selected from the public, private and community sectors within countries where Australia has a significant aid program.
ALA Scholarships are offered to high achievers from the Asia-Pacific region to undertake postgraduate study (Masters or Doctorate) at an Australian university. Study programs must relate to AusAID’s priority areas of disability, economic growth, education, environment, food security, gender, governance, health, human rights, infrastructure, regional stability, rural development and water & sanitation. Scholars also undertake an extensive Leadership Development Program while in Australia.
Selection for ALA Scholarships is highly competitive, based on leadership qualities and on academic excellence.
ALA Scholarships are an investment in the future of the Asia-Pacific region. In this regard, ALA scholars are required to return to their home country or the region for two years after they have completed their studies.
Goal of the ALA Scholarship Program
The goal of the ALA Scholarships program closely reflects the objective of AusAID awards. That is, through the provision of award opportunities, AusAID Awards seek to develop capacity of individuals and their workplaces to contribute to
- long-term development, stability and security of Australia’s partner countries
- establishment and maintenance of mutually beneficial linkages between partner countries and Australia, as well as within regional networks
Objectives of the ALA Scholarship Program
By providing ALA Scholarship awardees with opportunities to develop selected leadership skills1 and establish professional networks, the program intends to address the following objectives.
- Positive contributions by ALA Scholarship alumni to policies, practices and research relevant to respective country program objectives2, which are relatively greater than the contributions of other AusAID scholarship alumni.
- Participation in professional networking opportunities by ALA Scholarship alumni at the local, regional and global level, relevant to respective country program objectives, which is relatively greater than the level of professional networking of other AusAID scholarship alumni.
1 Leadership attributes that are particularly pertinent to development practitioners are strategic thinking (planning skills, inclusive participation and ownership, harnessing communication technology, knowledge transfer, managing for results, and ethical practice) and an inspirational approach (leading by example, effective communication and interpersonal skills).

Through the enhancement of leadership skills, ALA Scholarships seek to empower awardees to lead social and economic policy and development outcomes in their own countries and in the region. Current and future leaders in the Asia-Pacific region are provided with a unique opportunity to explore and harness their leadership potential.
AusAID has invested A$10.128 million over four years to deliver a comprehensive Leadership Development Program (LDP) to all ALA scholars.
The LDP comprises a three day conference in Canberra, regional workshops and leadership coaching and practical opportunities. The LDP increases skills in leadership and enhances participants’ understanding of the challenges at national, regional and global levels. The LDP aims to help scholars realise their full leadership potential and provides important networking and collaborative opportunities.

The Ethiopian economy remains heavily dependent on agriculture, which accounts for about 50 percent of the GDP. An estimated 85% of the population gains its livelihood directly or indirectly from agricultural production. Coffee exports accounts for more than 65 percent of foreign exchange earnings, while processed and semi-processed hides and skins are the second important foreign exchange earners.
The level of development of the manufacturing sector in Ethiopia is at its infancy; and the country’s industrial base is very low. The share of intermediate and capital goods industry is very insignificant. The industrial sector is heavily dependent on imports of semi-processed goods, raw materials, spare -parts and fuel. In addition to imported inputs, the factories depend upon backward and subsistence agriculture for their raw material demand.
It is only fourteen years since Ethiopia began moving from a state run economy to the market economy. The country is in the process of taking various reform measures.
The industries include food processing and beverages, automotive industries which include production of components and parts, textile and textile products and garments, leather and leather products, fertilizers (mini-Plant) and chemicals, drugs and pharmaceuticals are some among others.
The “service” sector which consists of Trade, Transport and Communications, Banking, Insurance and Real State, Public Administration and Defense, Education, Health and Domestic and other personal services has increased
The government has initiated a privatization program since 1995/96. Since this period of time, 85% of 909 factories have been privatized. However the number of manufacturing industries at the verge of the EPRDF led government was 283 operating only 20% of their manufacturing capacity compared with 70% currently.
The government uses different mechanisms to guide the economy on the right track which lead it to the way of development. Among the others, helping the private sector to be the leader in the free market economy is the crucial one. The Development Bank of Ethiopia provides long, medium & short term loan with technical supports for privet sector on behalf of the government.

Motivation
In university, I took management as my major. In addition, I am concerned with the promotion of administrative work and improvement of good governance. The course of Administration offered me an opportunity to be a producer and made me interested in it. After commencement, I found a job at Shashemene Catholic School as a director. It is a known school from the town. I am in charge of all the management of the two elementary school and the five kindergarten school. In addition, before graduation of Management, I have studied philosophy and theology. I have diploma in Philosophy and BD in theology from pontifical urbaniana University. It offered me a chance to know more spiritual life and the system of living with people so as to enhance my judgment about management performance.
Education Background
My fundamental education includes elementary school, high school, institution and college. After high school, I passed the high school entrance exam and with an excellent score, I was admitted by St Francis friary institution to study philosophy and theology. During the high school, introduced by teachers and formatters, I began to study philosophy and theology. At the same period, I found myself an interest of it. Thus, after the seven years of graduation, I chose to study management diploma in Africa Beza college and degree in Ethiopia Adventist college beside my regular of administrating the school. At the moment as par time I am teaching in Ethiopia Adventist College management courses.
PERSONAL STATEMENT OR AUTOBIOGRAPHY
Since childhood, I have a strong interest of being leading things in a smooth way. Along with growth, I got interest collaborating the youngsters in football team and alike. Also, I made up my mind that I want to major in management. Parents have known my interest for a long time. They never blocked me, and, instead, they offered their wholly support to me. For example, now, they encouraged me to study management in line of my inclination.
Honestly speaking, in our school there are 10 (ten) management committee. During the evaluation comparing to the other, I am one who ranked top from the other by the evaluation which is carried out by the workers. But speaking to my extracurricular activities and leadership, I am proud to say that for being first. In six-year mid school hood, I attended lots of competitions. Each time I confront it with sincere and bravery. I enjoyed the atmosphere of competition a lot. On the appendix, you will see a brief list of my activities and honors. In addition, I feel that I have a gift and an interest in language and oral expression. This point will be helpful to my working atmosphere for creating peaceful relation among the staff.

I am geraduating class student at Hawassa university with economics fild of study in 2009 accadamic year. And in tthe future I would like to upgread my knowlage with the same fild of study. Besibe this, the majior and most important thing which is responsible for infulencing my interst to up gread my knowlage with economics fild of study is that: the currentily financial crises of the world which leads millions of peoples in many country jobless( unemployed) and reduction for the capacity of many industries in different part of the world. Apart from these the financial criss creat great political,economic and social instabilty in many developing countries. For example, the financial criss leads the south east African countries ( specially in Zimbabwe) creat great economic problem. This leads to political shock in the specifide country. The problem of financial criss is also significant in my home land (Ethiopa), it makes the weak economy of the country to grow at very low rate than the pervious years. It affects also the performance of the banks and creat problem in the employment condtion.
In line with this in the future with cooporatioon with other economists I am try to protect my country as well as the globe from this type of problem as per my capacity is allow. Inorder to make my current dream real in the future, first of all I have a good knowalge with concernd fild of study. Because of this I would like to upgread my knowlage of economics by learing more about montary economics in my MA program.
The other thing which infulence me for masters program in economics is the continous problem that my world face due to graet industyralization and lack of knowlage about natural resource and environment positive conterbution for human life. The problem of global warming which spread and makes many part of the world to become desert during tthe past 20-28 years has great impact in many countries. Spercial the problem is severy in countries whose economy is highly depend up on the agricultural sector. Besaid this, the increase of world temperature by creating melting of the ice produce siginficant challege in many ice land countries and this problem will continue if effective measures are not taken at world level. As I am one of the member of the globe and one of the responsible body to protect the environment of ttis world in sustanabile and sutabile manner and to make it a place where ever humna beings as well as other animal speious to live in peace ful way I have to work hard to protect my environmentas per my knowlage. But to have a good knowlage with natural resouce and environment I have to upgread my knowlage with this course.
