Balmoral Residential Fellowships for German and International Applicants, 2016

Applications are invited for Balmoral residential fellowships available for both German and international applicants. For 2016, up to six fellowships (Two three months fellowships and four nine months fellowships) are awarded for visual artists and one fellowship is available for a curator. All residential fellowships run from June each year. The fellowships are endowed with 1,400 € a month. The curator scholarship is endowed with 1,400 euros per month. Fellows are required to write a report about their stay in the Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral afterwards. The application deadline is June 30th 2015.

Eligibility:
Fellowships for international visual artists:
-Eligible to apply for a Balmoral fellowship are visual artists of any age from Germany and around the world. The focus of artistic work for the residential fellowships for 2016 must be on the medium of drawing, whereby drawing does not necessarily mean just ‘graphite on paper’. Formal and conceptual exploration of the limits and possibilities of the genre are also welcome.
-The preconditions for applicants for the residential fellowships for visual artists are a completed course of study in art (M.F.A. or comparable) and three years of continuous artistic work after the conclusion of studies until the beginning of the fellowship. Applications are also possible for autodidacts distinguished by special artistic achievements, as documented by exhibitions and prizes.
-Knowledge of German or English is expected.
Balmoral residential fellowship for a curator:
-The Curator Scholarship is at national or international candidates awarded their university degree dates back (at least MA) not longer than five years. First professional experience is desirable. A good command of German and English is required.
-Services and conditions: The Curator Scholarship is a residential grant; a continuous stay is therefore mandatory.

Scholarship Description: Residential fellowships in the Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral in Bad Ems are awarded to international visual artists. Furthermore a curator fellowship is awarded to a junior academic graduate. There are following two type of fellowships available:
-Fellowships for international visual artists: For 2016, the residence fellowships will be awarded exclusively for drawing. Since 2013, fellowships are offered in one artistic genre or one theme each year. This offering, which is unique in Germany, is intended to enable deeper mutual creative cross-fertilisation among the resident artists. It will also lead to a more intensive specialist exchange of ideas with external artists, speakers, teachers, curators, etc. For 2016, the Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral is awarding two 3-month residential fellowships and four 9-month residential fellowships.
-Balmoral residential fellowship for a curator: The Artists’ House works through lectures, concerts and exhibitions in the public. Regularly are works of scholarship holders in “Made in Balmoral”, the exhibition space of the Künstlerhaus in downtown Bad Ems presented.Balmoral Castle is the link between the artistic work and theoretical reflection. Therefore, will  grant for a curator or a curator  advertised. It is expected the development of a final exhibition with an accompanying publication in collaboration with the fellows. Taking into account all of the Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture and the Rhineland-Palatinate Foundation awarded for cultural scholarships a year, the exhibition in the last month of the scholarship stay will be in the historic rooms of the  Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck  realized.

Duration of award(s): For international visual artists, there are 3-month and 9-month Balmoral residential fellowships available and for a curator there is 9-month residential fellowship available.

What does it cover?
-Fellowships for international visual artists: The fellowships are endowed with 1,400 € a month. The fellowship holders are provided with a furnished living/bedroom with shower/WC and a studio including electricity, water and heating. Running costs (electricity, water and heating) will be paid by the Künstlerhaus. Each apartment is equipped with an individual telephone and internet access. If required, the room is also wired up for radio and television. The lounge, the dining room and the kitchen are for joint use. Due to the historic nature of the building, the apartments and studios in terms of their size and equipment are normally only suitable for one single person. Pets are not admitted. Tiles for world-famous artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser were developed and produced in the company Baukeramik Ebinger in Bad Ems. The fellows have the opportunity to use the local workshop and the kiln for a fee. Personal support and guidance is also possible.
-Balmoral residential fellowship for a curator: During the fellowship, the scholarship / the scholarship should be free of all professional obligations. The scholarship / the fellow is a furnished living room / bedroom with shower / WC and a studio available. The utilities (electricity, water and heating) are borne by the Künstlerhaus. Each unit is equipped with a single phone line and Internet connection. Radio and television can be installed in any home studio. Lounge, dining room and kitchen are shared. Due to the historical requirements of the building, the living and working studios in size and equipment are generally aligned for one person only. The bring pets in the Schloss Balmoral villa is not possible.The scholarship / the scholarship can about his work necessary for its / technical equipment (printers, copiers, etc.) as well as a library with approximately 6,000 titles, mainly for modern, Contemporary Art and the most important art magazines have. Due to the historical requirements of the building, the living and working studios in size and equipment are generally aligned for only one person. With the scholarship confirmation the scholarship / the grantee receives a house contract and the house rules.The scholarship, following the signature of the house contract awarded as legally effective by the scholarship / scholarship holders.

Selection Criteria: For Curator Scholarship, the decision to award the grant is of a  jury  made ??with special emphasis on viability of theoretical work. The decision on the award of the fellowships for international visual artists is made by a jury of experts taking into special consideration the potential of the artistic work for development. The members of the jury make their choice according to the quality of the work samples applicants have to hand in together with their application. The selection committee normally consists of one chairperson and seven members of the jury who are expert representatives of the following professional groups:
-an art critic
-a museum director or curator
-a representative of the studies of Fine Arts from a university or an art academy
-a member of the artists associations in the Federal State of Rhineland-Palatinate
-a visual artist
-the artistic director of the Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral
-a former fellow
-the desk officer of the Ministry of Education, Science, Further Education and Culture of Rhineland-Palatinate, Mainz.

Notification: The applicants will not receive any reasons in writing for the decision made on the awarding of the fellowships, but will be informed of the result; preferable by e-mail.
