3 Academic Positions with a focus on research, funded by the Odysseus initiative

Ghent University has vacancies for 3 professorships, starting from 1 October 2008. It concerns 3 jobs as full-time Professor in the rank of Full Professor (hoogleraar) or Senior Full Professor (gewoon hoogleraar), with a focus on scientific research, financed by the Odysseus Initiative.
The posts may be filled in any field of study.
In principle each of these full-time positions will lead to a tenured position, without prejudice to the possibility of, in case of a first appointment as a professor, the Board of Governors of Ghent University to change the tenured position into an appointment for a duration of maximum three years possibility leading to tenure after a positive evaluation.
Taking up this position implies the privilege of focusing almost exclusively on research activities, as the teaching load must not exceed 9 study points on a yearly basis. These appointments can be renewed to a maximum of ten years. Afterwards, the amount of time devoted to teaching, research and related academic activities can be modified by the board of governors of the university, in consultation with the appointed professor.
Depending on the specific profile of the selected candidate, the degree of Senior Full Professor or Full Professor will be granted.
Profile:
? on the day of application, candidates should hold a PhD degree with doctoral thesis or a degree recognized as equivalent;
? having at least five years of post-doctoral research experience by 1 October 2008; for the last 2 years before the application the candidate must have (had) his/her main appointment at an institution abroad, and must have been associated with an institution abroad for at least 3 of the 5 years before this application.
? having conducted excellent scientific research in a field of study, reflected by, among other things, a strong record of international publications (journals and/or books) with peer review, and an obvious international profile;
? having acquired extensive experience in supervising research projects and/or coaching PhD students;
? possess the necessary didactic, organizational and communicative skills for teaching at an academic level;
? candidates must be granted an Odysseus-fund Type 1 by the FWO-Flanders before 1 October 2008. This Odysseus-fund must be applied for through Ghent University.
Candidates without knowledge of Dutch are welcome to apply as well. Upon tenure or in the view of permanent employment, however, they will be expected to be obtain a working knowledge of Dutch within three years. The official language at Ghent University is Dutch.
