Introduction to IELTS: International English Language Testing System

IELTS is International English Language Testing System. It is an international homogenize test of English language proficiency. It measures one’s proficiency of English language. IELTS is managed by the British council, IELTS Australia and Cambridge ESOL.

IELTS score has opened the door for students, researchers, candidates to get international education and employment all over the world. If you will attain a good score then the chances of getting entry into foreign universities will be more in English speaking countries like Australia, New Zealand and many other. Since 1989 over 6000 institutions across 120 countries accepted IELTS Scores as a valid indicator for candidates ability to communicate in English.

Structure of IELTS Test:
IELTS Test is of two types: the Academic or General training modules.
If you want to go for studies in foreign universities then the academic modules assess that whether you have proficiency in English to train at undergraduate, postgraduate level or not.
General test is required to be taken by candidates who wish to seek research program in foreign universities or permanent employment in English speaking countries like Australia, New Zealand, UK etc.

There are four modules in each test- Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Band Scores are used for each module. The Band Scale ranges from 0 to 9 (did not attempt the test to expert user). The first three modules listening, reading, writing are generally taken in one day while the speaking module may be taken at the period of seven days after taking other three modules. The test are designed to cover full range of ability from band scale score (0 to 9) i.e from non user to expert user.

Now it has become compulsory to take IELTS for students of many nationalities (like India, China, Nepal, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Pakistan, Bangladesh and many other countries) who want to obtain visas to Australia. You can not be granted an Australian student Visa without an IELTS score. To take admission in universities of English speaking countries, it is essential to take this type of tests as all teaching at these universities is carried out in English and teachers must be convinced that you have sufficient fluency in English to understand your course from the start.

To take admission for academic session 2010-2011 in Oxford , IELTS overall score of 7.0 is required in each of the four modules.
