The fifth edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject has been announced recently and it has featured 36 disciplines, thus making it one of the most prominent rankings .
The results are based on the expert opinion of 85,062 academics who identified the foremost institutions within their field and area of expertise and 41,910 employees who identified the universities from where outstanding graduates have studied in specific discipline.
Furthermore, an analysis of 17.3 million research papers along with 100 million citations was also undertaken to compile the results.
Three Australian Universities have been featured in the list in various disciplines out of which Australian National University has been ranked the highest in 4 disciplines while the University of Melbourne was ranked 5th in education and 8th in law.
The University of Sydney was ranked at 9th in education.
When it comes to the UK Universities, Cambridge is in the top 10 in 31 disciplines while Oxford is in top 10 in 29 disciplines.
American Universities top the rankings in varied disciplines. Amongst the US universities, Stanford is in the top 10 in 29 disciplines, Harvard in top 10 in 28 disciplines, Berkley in top 10 in 26 disciplines, and MIT in top 10 in 19 disciplines. It is worth noting that MIT is first in 11 disciplines from the 19, thus making it a strong contender.
New Zealand’s Otago University was ranked as 8th best in the world for Dentistry, followed by Massey University ranked as 15th in Veterinary Science and The University of Auckland was ranked 23rd for Developmental Studies.
According to QS head of research, Ben Sowter, “these rankings provide the most comprehensive global comparison of universities yet at individual subject level,”
