University of Michigan Free Online Course on Social Work Practice

University of Michigan is offering free online course on Social Work Practice in Community Organization, Management and Policy/Evaluation. This course is part of the Social Work: Practice, Policy and Research MicroMasters Program offered by MichiganX.

In this eight week course, applicants will learn about macro social work and how to have large scale impact on entire communities and systems of care. This course will start on July 25, 2017.

About This Course

Students will also learn concepts and practice skills involving assessment, problem solving and intervention planning at the macro level, and strategies to work effectively with communities and organizations. Content includes reflective practice and utilizing interpersonal skills in macro practice.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the historical, social, political and economic forces that have shaped and continue to shape macro practice in social work.
  • Identify community organization, management, and policy-advocacy strategies for dealing with contemporary social work and social welfare problems.
  • Demonstrate beginning level community organization, management, and policy advocacy skills in promoting social work values.
  • Apply NASW’s Code of Ethics and other professional codes to the selection of action strategies, and in particular applying them to those situations which affect disadvantaged/discriminated against populations.
  • Demonstrate the ability to utilize selected macro assessment tools to develop client-centered interventions.

Barbara Hiltz is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan School of Social Work. She received her MSW from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
