Further particulars
British Institute at Ankara (BIAA)
The objectives of the BIAA are:
- to enable UK scholars across the humanities and social sciences to undertake world-class original research and fieldwork focused on Turkey and the Black Sea littoral region;
- to encourage and facilitate collaborative research with other UK institutions and with scholars and institutions in Turkey and the Black Sea littoral region;
- to maintain a centre of research excellence in Anra focused on the archaeology, history and related subjects of Turkey.
At the centre of excellence in Ankara, the Institute wishes to maintain and develop use of its key faunal, botanical, inscription and ceramic collections along with extensive slide/photographic collections and excavation archives. The Institute aims to encourage increased use of these resources by British and other researchers. As a continuation of archive management work undertaken since 2002, the archives and collections project is to be maintained and gradually extended. The general aim of this project is to create electronic records of the BIAA archives and research collections. On-going work is required both to create a single format for the records and to input all the data. The Research Scholar will divide their time between participating in the archives and collections project and conducting their own research.
Research Scholarship
Applications are invited from candidates who should normally have completed a Masters degree, or be about to do so, and who intend to go on to conduct research at doctoral level.

The salary will be £800 per month. The BIAA will pay the cost of one return flight between the UK and Turkey. The position is tenable for 8 months (with the possibility of extending for an extra month) from 1 January 2009 with 20 days’ holiday. The Research Scholar will be expected to spend two-thirds of their time working on the archives and collections project and one-third of their time conducting their own research.
The subject of the proposed research should focus on Turkey and/or the Black Sea littoral and may fall within any of the academic disciplines of the arts, humanities and social sciences. It should lead to a proposal to conduct research at doctoral level.
