PhD-student position available at Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht

Job-description

The Maastricht Atrial Fibrillation Research Alliance affiliated to the Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (at Maastricht University) is seeking a highly motivated and ambitious PhD-student to conduct a research project on the pathophysiology of cardiac arrhythmias, specifically atrial fibrillation.

The project involves

• Molecular and cellular mechanisms of atrial remodeling.

• The role of Ca2+ as trigger of atrial arrhythmias and mediator of atrial remodeling.

• Diagnosis of the substrate of atrial fibrillation in animals models and patients using innovative mapping techniques.

• Optical mapping of membrane voltage and intracellular Ca2+ and Na+ concentration during atrial fibrillation.

• Further investigation of atrial-specific repolarising currents as drug targets for atrial fibrillation.

We especially would like to encourage young MDs with ambitions in clinical research to apply for the positions (Dutch language skills required). Integration of research activities in a clinical training program in cardiology (electrophysiology) is possible.

Requirements

• University degree in medicine, biology, biomedical engineering or a comparable degree in life sciences.
• Be informed of relevant (scientific) developments within the named fields
• Keen analytical ability; profound research affinity
• Very flexible, motivated and enthusiastic
• Good writing skills, good communication skills

Animal caretaker degree (Art.12 or Art.9) is preferred

Organization

The Maastricht Atrial Fibrillation Research Group is a network of scientists dedicated to research on atrial arrhythmias. The alliance is affiliated to the Academic Hospital and the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands. Its mission is to explore the pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation and to develop new diagnostic tools as well as therapeutic approaches both in animal models and in patients. The alliance closely co-operates with a variety of national, European and transatlantic networks of internationally recognized experts. The networks are financed by the Dutch Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), the Center for Translational Molecular Medicine (CTMM), the Dutch Research Organisation (NWO), the European Union (EU), and the Leducq Foundation.

Conditions of employment according to CAO of Maastricht University.

Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Starting date: 1.9.2008

Duration of the contract: 4 years
Maximum hours per week: 38
