GBS Gold Environmental Science Scholarship: Charles Darwin University
GBS Gold Australia Pty and the Katherine Youth Development Association has established, through Charles Darwin University Foundation, the GBS Gold and the Katherine Youth Development Environmental Science Scholarship to encourage Northern Territory student participation at Charles Darwin University (CDU), particularly those from the Katherine, and Daly River Area.
The amount of the GBS Gold and Katherine Youth Development Environmental Science Scholarship is $5,000 each year for up to 3 years subject to satisfactory academic progress, i.e. have not failed a unit and have achieved a Credit average in each semester of enrolment while receiving the scholarship.
GBS Gold may offer the recipient paid work placements in semester breaks, to be negotiated directly with the recipient by GBS Gold.
Eligibility
The successful applicant will:
• be enrolled to the Bachelor of Environmental Science at Charles Darwin University in 2009,
• be a resident of the Northern Territory,
• be Australian citizen or permanent residents; and
• have an appropriate academic record.
Preference will be given to applicants who reside in Katherine and the Daly River area.

I hold a BSc Ecology degree from The Eduardo Mondlane University- Maputo Mozambique. It is my expressed desire to further my qualification by studying for a Masters Degree in an Environment and Natural Resource Management discipline. I am particularly interested in studying coastal resources management because I am working with artesanal fisheries communities, helping themselves monitoring their local, coastal and marine resources. In daily work I sometimes faces some complex problems that can be solved by improving my knowledge in coastal resources.
Most of the population in Mozambique depends on marine resources, although there are a significant number of fisheries in inland waters. Mozambican government’s policy is fighting against poverty. The majority of the population is poor especially in rural areas. Fisheries may be an engine of development for coastal communities if the means of fishing are monitored adequately.
