Confucius Institute offers scholarships for qualified Chinese language teachers and talented students of Chinese language which can help pay your tuition fees and also support you throughout your studies. The scholarship is available for pursuing master’s degree in teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages (MTCSOL), one-academic-year study, bachelor’s degree in teaching Chinese to speakers of other Languages (BTCSOL) and one-semester study and four-week study.

The aim of the scholarship program is to provide sponsorship to students, scholars and Chinese language teachers of other countries for pursuing a study in relevant universities in China (hereinafter referred to as “host institutions”).

Confucius Institute is a non-profit public educational organization affiliated with the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, whose aim is to promote Chinese language and culture, support local Chinese teaching internationally, and facilitate cultural exchanges.

Applicants should meet the language requirements of the higher education institutions. General English language requirements for English-instructed programs and Chinese-instructed programs are different.

Course Level: Scholarship is available for students, scholars and Chinese language teachers of other countries for pursuing a study in relevant universities in China.

Study Subject(s): The scholarship is offered for pursuing master’s degree in teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages (MTCSOL), one-academic-year study, bachelor’s degree in teaching Chinese to speakers of other Languages (BTCSOL) and one-semester study and four-week study.

Scholarship Award: The Confucius Institute Scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fee, accommodation fee, living allowance and comprehensive medical insurance expenses.

Eligibility: Application is open to applicant who owns a non-Chinese citizenship, aged between 16 and 35, in good health condition,  (Applicant is currently working in a Chinese language teaching position shall not exceed the age limit of 45. Undergraduate student shall not exceed the age limit of 20).
-Scholarship for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL): This category provides a sponsorship for 2 academic years. Applicant should own a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent, a minimum score of 180 in HSK Test (Level 5), and a minimum score of 50 in HSKK Test (Intermediate Level). Applicant who is able to provide the employment agreement or certification upon finishing the study from designated working institutions is preferred.
-Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study + MTCSOL Students: This category provides a sponsorship for 3 academic years. Applicant should provide the employment agreement from a designated Confucius Institute or a prospective working institution. Applicant should hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent, a minimum score of 180 in HSK Test (Level 3), and a minimum score of 60 in HSKK Test (Beginner Level).
-Scholarship for Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL) Students: This category provides a sponsorship for 4 academic years. Applicant should hold a
-Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study Students: This category provides a sponsorship for 11 months. Application is open to Confucius Institute (Classroom) students, overseas Chinese language teachers, Chinese language major students and excellent performers in HSK test. International students who are now studying in China are not eligible for the scholarship. Applicant should have a minimum score of 180 in HSK Test (Level 3), and 60 in HSKK test (Beginner Level). Alternatively, applicant should hold a minimum score of 180 in BCT (A) , and a minimum score of 180 BCT (Speaking).
-Scholarship for One-Semester Study Students-This category provides a sponsorship for 5 months. Applicant should have no prior experience of studying in China, but have a minimum score of 120 in HSK Test (Level 2), and a minimum score of 40 in HSKK (Beginner Level). Alternatively, applicant should have a minimum score of 100 in BCT (A), and a minimum score of 120 in BCT (Speaking).
-Scholarship for Four-Week Study Students: This category provides a sponsorship for 4-week study which is mainly focusing on Chinese language. Application is mainly open to Confucius Institute (Classroom) students, excellent performers in HSK test, and outstanding club members of Confucius Institute Magazine. Applicant should submit a HSK or BCT score report, and have no prior experience of studying in China. “Chinese Bridge” (Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students) Winners who have been awarded the 2016 “Confucius Institute Scholarship Certificate” can apply for admission according to the scholarship specified in the certificate.

NationalityThe international students (non-Chinese citizens) can apply for this scholarship.

College Admission Requirement:

Entrance Requirement: Qualified Chinese language teachers and talented students of Chinese language are eligible to apply.

Test Requirement: No

English Language Requirements: General Chinese Language requirements for application to Chinese-instructed program
-Old HSK6 (or new HSK5)or above is required for application of liberal arts, economics and management majored students.
-Old HSK3 (or new HSK4) or above is required for application of science, engineering and medical science majored students.

General English language requirements for application to English-instructed programs:
-Free English Language testing for students from English speaking countries.
-Free English Language testing for students from countries in which English is the major teaching language on condition that the relevant proof documents were provided.
-TOEFL 550, IELTS 5.5 or Pass university’s entrance examination.

China Scholarships

Supporting Documents: Applicants must attach the electronic files of the following materials:
-Photocopy of Passport Photo Page
-Photocopy of HSK and HSKK Result Report
-Notarized highest education diplomas attained or proof of study
-Reference Letter and Letter of Commitment. Students attending Chinese language programs of universities in countries with no Confucius Institutes established shall attach a reference letter signed and issued by the university President. The Master’s Degree Scholarship applicants are required to submit reference letters provided by two professors or associate professors (in Chinese or English). A written commitment stating that the applicant will be engaged in Chinese language teaching for at least 5 years after graduation (written in Chinese and sign with signature).
-Applications under the age of 18 shall submit relevant legal documents of entrusted legal guardians in China.
-Winners of the finals of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and for Foreign High School Students in China shall submit the scholarship certificate. Winners of preliminary rounds of the “Chinese Bridge” Proficiency Competitions in their countries shall provide award proof and reference letter provided by the organizers.
-Chinese language teachers shall submit certificate of employment and recommendation letters provided by institutes they work for.
-Those applying for the Scholarship for Students of One-Academic-Year + Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages are required to provide the agreement signed with the Confucius Institute or the institute which they will be working for.
-Other materials required by host institutes.

How to Apply: Applicants must log onto the Scholarship website, fill out the “Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form”.

Application Deadline: The scholarship winners shall register at the host institutes before the deadline set by the institutes. Scholarships will not be kept for those who do not register on time without reasonable cause.
