Constable Pita Fuafiva Senior Police Pacific Scholarship, New Zealand Citizens, Research

Job Description: Established in 2003 by the NZ Police in honour of the late Constable Pita Fuafiva Senior (Snr), a respected member of the Auckland City District Police and Pacific peoples. Established to support Pacific students from a wide range of faculties in undertaking doctoral research on topics relating to any aspect of crime or policing.

Selection process:
* The Scholarship shall be awarded to a candidate who is enrolled and has paid the fees, or arranged to pay the fees, for a full-time Doctoral study programme at the University of Auckland. Applications will be accepted from a wide range of disciplines where the research topic is related to crime or policing.
* The basis of selection shall be academic merit. This will be measured on the grade point average assessed over the applicants’ two most recent years of equivalent full-time study, plus the quality of his/her research proposal and curriculum vitae. In considering applications and awarding the scholarship, the selection committee shall have due regard to Pacific descent, and the availability and ability of the applicant to be a role model to Pacific students, and to make presentations from time to time to relevant groups and schools on the topic of crime or policing.
* The Scholarship is tenable by students of Pacific descent who are New Zealand Citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand.

How do students apply?
Applicants will be required to sign an undertaking that they agree to the Selection Committee receiving a copy of a record of any criminal convictions held by the Wanganui Computer Centre (or its successor). This is to ensure that the recipient has not been found guilty of an offence that is inconsistent with upholding the law. Applicants are required to sign the following statement: ‘If chosen as a finalist for this award, I authorise the release of my record of criminal offences from the Wanganui Computer Centre to the Selection Committee, to ensure I comply with the criteria for this Scholarship. I understand that all details of this record check will remain confidential to the members of the Selection Committee and no copy of this material will be retained on any files held by the University or relating to this Scholarship.

Decision makers
The Scholarship will be awarded by the University of Auckland Council upon the recommendation of a selection committee comprising the Vice Chancellor of The University of Auckland (or nominee), the Director of Pacific Studies (or nominee), and two representatives from the NZ Police.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
The Scholarships’ emolument will be paid in two instalments; at the beginning of the first and second semesters.

Application Deadline: 31 October2010
