Core Liberal Arts Faculty Positions
The Asian University for Women (www.asian-university.org) invites applications for its inaugural faculty of 16 positions to begin in Bangladesh July 2009.
The AUW is being established as a leading institution of higher education for women across South and Southeast Asia. While international in its vision and scope, the University will remain rooted in a context unique to the diverse cultural, religious, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds of South and South East Asia. The civic and academic goal of the AUW is to better prepare disadvantaged women of high ability and potential through a world-class education that will encompass both the progressive liberal arts & sciences and requisite professional training in order to further the intellectual and professional development of eligible young women.
- Positions:
- Humanities (4 hires will be made in the following or related areas) – Humanities, Religion, History, Art, Ethics, Literature, etc.
- Social Sciences (4 hires) – Economics, Sociology, Political Science, Women’s Studies, Cultural Studies, Geography, Psychology, etc.
- Sciences (4 hires) – Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Science Education, etc.
- Quantitative Reasoning (4 hires) – Applied Statistics, Applied Calculus, Applied Computer Science, Quantitative/Math Education, etc.
- Essential duties:
- Collaboratively develop interdisciplinary theme-based curriculum during 6 week Faculty Development Session (July 2009). Themes proposed, but are not limited to: Water, Food/Agriculture, Climate Change (Sciences); Economics of Inequality in Asia, Global Woman’s Health, Global Security (Social Sciences); War & Conflict Resolution, Asian Religions & Cultures, Asian Societies (Humanities).
- Team teaching integrated core introductory courses with active-, learning-focused approaches.
- Job requirements:
- A clear commitment to active-learning pedagogy and mentoring students
- Flexibility, generally: this is a start-up University, and it is in Bangladesh.
- Other info:
- Ph.D preferred; exceptional teaching plus All But Dissertated or Masters considered. Interdisciplinary teaching or research background desired. International experience preferred. Involving undergraduates in research and/or service learning connected to the Asia region desired and supported.
- Average teaching load: 2 courses/semester, 25 students/course. Inaugural entering student class: 200 students.
