Applications are invited for DAAD GERLS (German-Egyptian Research Long-Term Scholarship) for 2016-17 academic year. Up to 81 scholarships will be awarded for Egyptian young researchers who have been awarded their Master’s degree recently and would like to continue their PhD-related research in Germany. Generally speaking, the scholarships within this program are awarded for 12 months, subject to extension up to 42 months. Candidates can select adequately structured PhD courses or PhD supervisors in Germany themselves in order to join the GERLS program. The deadline for applications is 31st October 2015.

Eligibility: The target group of this program will be comprised of Egyptian researchers who generally have been awarded M.A. / M.Sc. degrees in the past three years.
Scholarship Open for International Students: Egyptian researchers are eligible to apply of this DAAD GERLS program.
Scholarship Description: The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education are happy to publish the 8th call of their joint funding programme GERLS. The target groups for this programme are young researchers who have been awarded their Master’s degree recently and would like to continue their PhD-related research in Germany. GERLS is a direct outcome of the German-Egyptian Year of Science and Technology 2007. Following types of scholarships will be awarded:
-Full PhD Scholarship up to 42 months in all fields of academic studies except the ones mentioned under Specialization. PhD will be awarded by a German university.
-Channel Scholarship up to 24 months in all fields of study except the ones mentioned under Specialization. PhD will be awarded by an Egyptian university.
-Specialization Scholarship up to 24 months for the study of fine and applied arts, architecture and music without resulting in a degree.
Number of award(s): The German Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education offer up to 81 postgraduate scholarships to Egyptian doctoral candidates within the GERLS program every year.
Duration of award(s): Scholarships within this program are awarded for 12 months, subject to extension up to 42 months.
What does it cover? The GERLS scholarship includes:
-A monthly basic stipend of 1000 Euros for a Ph.D. candidate, plus individual surcharges and standard annual allowances.
-A monthly family allowance if applicable.
-An allowance for health insurance.
-German language course and cultural preparation course.
Selection Criteria: The candidates will be selected in two rounds. First, a pre-selection procedure will identify the group of applicants to be invited for the second phase consisting of a personal interview with the GERLS bi-national independent selection committee. Pre- and final selection of the candidates will be conducted according to, but not limited to following criteria:
-Excellent study achievement.
-Good command of languages: English language command is required, while German language command is a plus.
-Scientific merits, including quality of the proposal; the benefit to Egypt; preparation and feasibility of the project; and quality of the acceptance letter
Notification: Final selection phase will be based on the interviews, which will take place in the first quarter of 2016 at the DAAD premises in Cairo; however, the exact date will be defined later by the DAAD Cairo office. Final result will be announced in April 2016.
How to Apply: The application will be submitted online through the DAAD portal. 3 copies from the complete “Application Summary” have to be sent to the DAAD Cairo office via post latest by the deadline.
N.B. Applicants from the field of Archaeology and Islamic studies could submit the application in German language; however applicants from the field of German studies have to submit the application in German.
