Dalton Fellow in Radiation Science, The University of Manchester, UK

The Dalton Nuclear Institute and the School of Chemistry seek to appoint a Dalton Fellow in Radiation Science, including Radiation-induced Damage and Radiation Chemistry. The appointment is part of the University of Manchester’s commitment being world-leading in the fields of nuclear science and engineering by 2015.

The fellowship is a fully funded five-year appointment. It is supported by a cooperative initiative between the Dalton Nuclear Institute (DNI) of The University of Manchester and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) to revitalise nuclear energy sciences in the United Kingdom, in conjunction with the Centre for Nuclear Energy Technology (C-NET) project of the Dalton Nuclear Institute (DNI) of The University of Manchester and the North West Development Agency (NWDA).
Applications are welcomed from candidates with aspirations to develop a world-leading experimental programme in radiation-induced effects, including radiation-induced damage and radiation chemistry; however, consideration will be given to all qualified candidates with an established background in any aspect of physical radiation sciences or free radical chemistry. The main criterion will be the calibre of the research pursued.

The successful applicant will be expected to develop a high profile, sustainable research group as part of the DNI’s radiation science programme under development in West Cumbria, as well as to undertake a teaching role in one of the largest chemistry departments in Europe. This dual role requires a commitment to performing research at a facility located about 120 miles from the University’s campus. Subject to meeting University probationary requirements, including the demonstration that the appointed fellow is capable of financially supporting a research group consistent with School and Faculty targets, it is expected that the Dalton Fellow will be considered for a permanent Lectureship within the School of Chemistry.

Salary: £36,715 – £45,155 p.a.
