The interdisciplinary Junior Research Group “The Fascination of Efficiency: Migrating Ideas and Emerging Bureaucracies in Europe and Asia since the Early Modern Era”, Project A 4, Leader Susan Richter, within the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context, Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows” at the University of Heidelberg welcomes applications for one Doctoral fellowship in Asian studies. The project explores transcultural migrations of notions of order, bureaucratic efficiency and bureaucratic ethos and their realisation by the transfer of institutions between Europe and Asia from the age of Enlightenment to the early 20th century.
The candidates for the Doctoral stipend should have an expertise in history, political science or sociology and should be able to read and communicate in English and German, and have language skills in an Asian Language (e.g. Chinese, Japanese). Applicants are requested to send in project proposals in English relating to administrative reforms in Asia in the 19th and early 20th century. Project proposals should refer to the influence of European concepts of bureaucracy on these reforms. Applications further have to include a CV, a list of publications, teaching experiences and one letter of recommendation.
The amount of doctoral stipend is 1000 € per month and will be awarded for two years with possible renewal for a third year after a successful evaluation. The Positions would start on 1 October 2008.
The announcements are addressed in equal measure to applicants with an European and an Asian back-ground. The cluster strongly encourages qualified women scholars to apply.
