In a joint project, the IMPRS Uncertainty and the CGS offer four doctoral positions starting in summer/fall 2017. We particularly encourage candidates with an interest in behavioral economics and interdisciplinary research question to apply.

( votes)The International Max Planck Research School on Adapting Behavior in a Fundamentally Uncertain World (IMPRS Uncertainty) and the Cologne Graduate School in Management, Economics, and Social Sciences (CGS) as well as the Max Planck Research Group “Moral Courage: Psychological processes and determinants of bystander intervention against norm violations”.
The IMPRS Uncertainty combines approaches from Economics, Law, and Psychology to explain human decisions under uncertainty more effectively and to better design institutional responses. It is jointly hosted by the Max Planck Institutes for Research on Collective Goods in Bonn and for Human Development in Berlin; the School of Economics and Business Administration and the Institute of Psychology of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, the University of Cologne, and the University of Bonn, Institute of Commercial and Economic Law.
The CGS offers a three-year doctoral program to outstanding students holding a Master’s degree (or German Diploma or equivalent) in Management, Economics and Social Sciences. The research track “Design & Behavior” aims at training PhD students in the emerging field of Behavioral Economic Design, i.e., the science of designing real-world institutions, rules, and mechanisms applying fundamental insight and methods from (behavioral) Microeconomics.
CGS-IMPRS students will be members of both the CGS and IMPRS Uncertainty and participate in the coursework offered by both institutions. The CGS course program will start in October 2017. During the first year, students will take part in courses on multidisciplinary methods and theories and subject-specific courses. During the second and third year, students mainly conduct research and work on their thesis. Students in the IMPRS Uncertainty preferably start in July. The Curriculum of the IMPRS Uncertainty has three pillars: summer schools, Thesis and Topics workshops, and local training.
The Max Planck Research Group “Moral Courage: Psychological processes and determinants of bystander intervention against norm violations” headed by Dr. Anna Baumert is a new research unit at the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods. Candidates for this group should have a background in social or personality psychology and strong quantitative skills.
Applicants for all positions are required to hold a Diploma, a Master’s Degree, or a State Exam with honors in one of the above mentioned disciplines or an equivalent degree in a related discipline.
