PhD position available in RNA and Infection Biology

Doctoral program in RNA Biology
Max F. Perutz Laboratories, University of Vienna, Austria

Description:
A PhD position is available to study the role of small RNAs in the regulation of virulence in Streptococcus pyogenes. S. pyogenes is a gram-positive bacterial pathogen responsible for life-threatening diseases in humans. The capacity of this pathogen to initiate its virulence program and consequently cause disease depends on complex regulatory processes that control the expression of virulence factors in response to changing environmental conditions. In the proposed project, we are interested in understanding how a novel class of molecules, regulatory small RNAs, interfere in these processes by fine-tuning gene expression.

Our lab is part of the Max F. Perutz Laboratories (http://www.mfpl.ac.at/). MFPL is located at the Vienna Biocenter Campus, which comprises several private and university research institutes in molecular life sciences (http://www.viennabiocenter.org/), thus offering a highly interactive and international research environment.

The PhD position is integrated in the doctoral program in RNA biology (http://www.projects.mfpl.ac.at/dk-rna-biology/), which is part of the Vienna Biocenter International PhD Program in Molecular Life Science (http://www.univie.ac.at/vbc/PhD/). The position is a full-time position for three years with a competitive salary funded by the Austrian Science Foundation (FWF). Highly qualified applicants from all over the world are invited to apply, provided that they are not older than 30 years. All applicants must hold or anticipate receiving a university degree equivalent to a European university diploma / degree within the second half of 2008. Prior hands-on experience in molecular biology is highly desirable.

Application details:
Candidates should send a CV, a brief outline of their research experience and interests, and two letters of reference to emmanuelle.charpentier@univie.ac.at. Since the application deadline for the doctoral program in RNA biology is May 18th, 2008, please send your pre-application to Emmanuelle Charpentier by May 10th, 2008.
