Doctoral Studentship in Social Anthropology at the Department of Social Anthropology, Stockholm University, Sweden.

The Department of Social Anthropology, Stockholm University, announces a vacancy for a salaried doctoral studentship, commencing January 1, 2011.

The doctoral programme consists of 240 university credits (4 years of study), of which the doctoral thesis is worth 150 credits and course work 90 credits.

The position is for one year initially but can be extended for up to two years at a time. The position may be held for a maximum of four years of full-time doctoral research. The first years consists of 100 % research financed by a grant and thereafter a salary for three years and nine months consisting of 80 % research and 20 % of work at the department (primarily administrative tasks and teaching).

Who can apply?
To be eligible for doctoral research you must have:

  • an examination at advanced level (e.g. Masters),
  • have a minimum of 240 university credits, of which at least 60 must be at advanced level, or
  • have equivalent qualifications from Sweden or abroad.
  • Applicants who met these basic eligibility requirements for doctoral study by 1 July 2007 are thereafter eligible to apply for doctoral study until the end of June 2015 at the latest. For special eligibility you must have at least 120 credits in social anthropology or equivalent of which at least 60 credits are at the advanced level. A minimum of 15 credits at advanced level must be from dissertation or project work. In addition to these requirements knowledge of Swedish and English is required. Teaching at the doctoral level in social anthropology is in Swedish and English. Doctoral candidates must have sufficiently good spoken and written English to be able to meet the demands of teaching and course literature without difficulty.

    Admission:
    Admission to the doctoral programme is based on an assessment of the applicant’s ability successfully to complete the course. Admission is in competition with other applicants and is based on the academic merits of the texts the applicant has submitted and wishes to be assessed. Applicants may be called to an interview.

    Vacancies are announced in June/July. The final date for applications is September 21, 2010.

    Applicants who can demonstrate full financing for the duration of the programme can apply at the same time.

    Selection:
    The selection criterias are:

  • independent judgement and academic rigour displayed in previous research,
  • ability to formulate research questions,
  • ability to work within a given time frame,
  • methodological and scientific maturity,
  • ability to analyse material critically,
  • ability to organise material with the help of anthropological concepts and methods,
  • ability to conduct an analysis in an original and scientific manner (where originality lies in the analysis rather than the material),
  • ability to carry out ethnographic observations and reflections, and
  • ability to cooperate and communicate with others.

  • statement of intent (3–4 pages) where you describe why you are applying to the doctoral programme, and which research questions you wish to pursue,
  • examination record from LADOK and signed copies of educational certificates and evidence of special eligibility,
  • six examples of each of the independent works (dissertations, articles, etc.) you wish to be assessed,
  • the names and addresses of two referees from the undergraduate and Masters levels who know you and can vouch for your abilities, and
  • any other documents you wish to be taken into consideration (including other references).
