Fellowship in Economics of Health of UK

Job Description: The MRC fellowship in Economics of Health extends the preceding joint MRC/NIHR/ESRC fellowship, established to support two rounds of annual fellowship competitions. In funding a further competition, MRC aims to strengthen capacity in health economics by attracting early postdoctoral researchers trained in economics research methods to apply their skills to health economics problems.

The MRC fellowship provides up to three years early-career support to help individuals begin to establish a research track record in the field and to undertake further training. As such the aim of the fellowship is to:

* Develop and execute a programme of challenging postdoctoral research, applying econometric methods to an important health question;
* Undertake specific, high quality training to gain the additional skills needed to deliver the research;
* Undertake a programme personal development towards rapidly becoming an independent research scientist in the field of economics of health;
* Publish and otherwise disseminate the research findings from their fellowship.

Applications are now invited for commencement in 2011.

Who can apply?

The competition is open to applicants with some advanced training in any field of economics who can demonstrate the transferability of their research skills to the field of the economics of health. It is also open to applicants who have recently ‘transferred’ to health economics and require further advanced training. Those with prior training in econometric methods are particularly encouraged to apply. In all cases, we expect applications to demonstrate that candidates have, or will have, strong links with established health economics groups.

Applicants must either have a PhD/DPhil or expect to do so by the time of take-up of the award, and must be early career and not have more than three years (full-time equivalent) post-doctoral experience. Applicants should hold a PhD or DPhil in either economics or one that combines training in economics with research in related areas (for example, statistics, and epidemiology).

The deadline for applications is 24 September 2010
