I N T R O D U C T I O N
These Scholarships were established in 2002 by the Dean of the School of Computing &
Mathematical Sciences.
R E G U L A T I O N S
1.
The award will be known as the Economics and Statistics Entrance Scholarship.
2.
The Scholarships will have a value of up to $4,000 each and up to two Scholarships will be
made available in 2008. The Scholarship is tenable for one year.
3.
The Economics and Statistics Entrance Scholarships are open to applicants who enrol full-
time in the first year of the Bachelor of Science degree at Waikato University with a major
in Statistics and a specialisation in Economics.

In selecting the successful applicant(s) for the Economics & Statistics Entrance
Scholarships, the Selection Panel will give preference to applicants of high academic calibre
who will be expected to have performed well in the National Certificate in Educational
Achievement (NCEA) Level 3 and / or the NZ Scholarships assessments, OR other
qualifications recognized for University Entrance (for example the Cambridge International
Examinations). Other criteria taken into consideration will include character and general all-
round achievement.

Candidates for the Scholarship must have taken economics and one mathematics paper
(mathematics with calculus or statistics and modelling) in NCEA Level 3 and / or the NZ
Scholarships assessments OR equivalent papers in other qualifications recognized for
University Entrance.
6.
Candidates for the Scholarship must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.
7.
Together with their completed application form, applicants must submit a brief CV that
addresses the criteria listed in 4 above. Applicants must also submit two references that
support their academic and extracurricular achievements.
8.
The Selection Panel for the Scholarship will comprise the School of Computing &
Mathematical Sciences representative on the Scholarships Committee, the Chairperson of
the Department of Statistics, and the Chairperson of the Department of Economics, or
nominees.
9.
Applicants for the Scholarship may be short-listed and may be required to attend an
interview.
10. The Selection Panel may refrain from making a recommendation, or may to decide to re-
advertise if it finds that there are insufficient applications of merit.
11. In exceptional circumstances a Scholarship may be shared.
12. The Scholarship will be paid in two equal instalments in April and August of the year of
tenure. Each instalment will be one half of the amount awarded. Payment of the second
instalment will be conditional on the recipient passing all the papers taken in Semester A
and on continued enrolment in an approved course of study.
13. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Scholarships Committee on behalf of the Academic
Board of the University of Waikato.
14. The Scholarships Committee may terminate a Scholarship at any time if it is satisfied that
the holder is not following an approved programme of study or is not otherwise complying
with the conditions governing the Scholarship. The holder of a Scholarship shall have the
right to appeal to the Academic Board against any decision to terminate the award.
15. The Scholarship recipient may be recognized at a function organized to promote
scholarships more widely throughout the University.
16. The Scholarship may be held with any other bursary, scholarship or award.
17. The University may from time to time vary these regulations.
