Fellowship Program

The aim of the EHA Fellowship Program is to promote European hematological research and to support young basic and clinical researchers.

Eligible

Research fellowships are intended supporting junior investigators and include the long-established José Carreras Foundation – EHA Young Investigator Fellowship. All applicants must be, or become, members of EHA when submitting their application. EHA fellowships are also open for members from non-European countries.

José Carreras – EHA Young Investigator Fellowship

The José Carreras Foundation – EHA Young Investigator Fellowship program provides seed grant funds to promising young investigators to encourage and promote quality research in hematology. This research fellowship is awarded to the applicant with the highest score and sponsored through the EHA via unrestricted educational grants from the three European José Carreras Foundations: José Carreras International Leukemia Foundation, Fondation José Carreras pour la lutte contre la leucèmie, Genève and Deutsche José Carreras Leukämie Stiftung e.V.

Funding

The grant is for a two-year period.

The recipient will receive a total of EUR 84.000 which will be provided in two annual portions of EUR 42.000 to be transferred to the host institution.

From the total grant of EUR 42.000 per year, a maximum of EUR 3.000 per year is paid to the institution for institutional overheads to help defray the costs of administering the project

The remainder of the grant (EUR 39.000 per year) is designed to mainly cover salary expenses up to a maximum of EUR 30.000 per year, including fringe benefits; a maximum of EUR 9.000 per year can be used for expenses (e.g. consumables, travel, equipment) necessary for pursuit of the research project.

EHA Research Fellowships

The EHA research fellowships which are fully sponsored by the EHA, are aimed at promoting high quality European hematological research by junior basic and clinical researchers in the fields of malignant and non-malignant hematological diseases.

Funding

Each grant is for a two-year period.
The recipient will receive a total of EUR 72,000 which will be provided in two annual portions of EUR 36,000 to be transferred to the host institution.

The grant is designed to cover salary and other expenses (e.g. supplies, equipment and travel) which are necessary for pursuit of the recipient’s research project.

Guidelines

Applicants must be, or become, a member of EHA when submitting their application

Applicants can be a MD or PhD

Applicants must be within 12 years of MD graduation or less than 8 years of post-doc experience

Applicants with an MD must be in training in a hematology sub-specialty or in a post-graduate training program.

Applicants with a PhD must be working in a hematology research laboratory or hematology department.

The sponsoring facility must be an Academic Institution. An institutional commitment is required when the application is submitted and must include a description of institute’s policy regarding institutional overhead costs for externally funded projects.

The primary preceptor must be in the candidate’s proposed research field and must assume responsibility and provide guidance for the research

Reporting

An interim report highlighting the project’s progress and summarizing the use of funds is required at the end of the first year.

A final report highlighting the project’s results and summarizing the use of funds is required at the end of the second year.

The recipient is required to respond to the Association’s request for information on their career progress following the active grant.

Recipients are responsible for presenting their research findings in an oral presentation or poster at the Annual EHA Congress within two years following the ending of the grant period.

Recipients are also strongly encouraged to submit a paper to Haematologica/The Hematology Journal; the official Journal of the EHA.

All scientific publications, oral presentations, press releases or other information emanating from the project financed by the Fellowship must include the following statement: “This research was funded partly by the Grant (number or code) awarded by the European Hematology Association”.
