Job Description: PhD studentship funded under EPSRC Industrial CASE scheme is available within the School of Engineering at Warwick. The project will be based in the brand new laboratory of Clean Chemical Processes in the group of Professor Alexei Lapkin and is a close collaboration with MEL Chemicals.

The project will develop approaches to synthesis of inorganic materials with the desired properties of particle shape and pore structure, that can be used as supports for catalysts or as sorbents in environmental applications (such as sequestration of carbon dioxide). Synthesis of materials will be transferred from traditional batch to intensive flow process. Expected outcomes are: a significant reduction in the amount of waste water produced during synthesis of materials, significant increase in process throughput, access to novel material’s properties, new process with commercial viability. Fundamental questions of reactions under non-equilibrium, non-stoichiometric conditions will be studied using in-situ Raman using group’s microfluidic facilities. The project will involve fundamental knowledge in inorganic chemistry, elements of organic synthesis and will utilise novel approaches to synthesis, such as micro reactors and flow processes. Industrial training at MEL Chemicals site is an integral part of the project.  Student on this project will become an associate of UK’s Chemistry Innovation Knowledge Transfer Network, which offers significant networking and career development opportunities.

Successful applicants would have a 1st class MChem or MEng degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering and have strong interest in Clean Processes, Sustainable Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry.

The project will start in October 2010. Starting stipend (tax free): £16,000.
