Job Description : This EPSRC Project Studentship offers an exciting opportunity for a graduate student to pursue a PhD degree based at the University of Manchester School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, but working as part of a team in partnership with academic partners in metallurgy at the University of Birmingham and five industrial partners from the power and non-destructive testing sectors.

This project aims to build on the electromagnetic (EM) sensors and analysis systems developed in previous work to realise a new generation of non-contact EM sensor systems for monitoring critical power station components (for example bends and welds in pipe work, boiler headers etc.). Sensor signals will be linked to microstructural changes using creep samples, samples removed from service and model systems. Modelling, with FEM and analytical solutions, will be used to predict sensor signals based on known microstructural changes, literature and measured values for conductivity and permeability changes and our previous work. The work will consider sensors for in-service microstructural monitoring and for use during shutdown. The research intends to answer the “proof of concept” questions related to the feasibility of this technology for sustained operation at high temperature. These answers are essential in building confidence within the industry, which is vital to making the next step towards a viable commercial proposition and provide the investment needed for future commercial development and deployment.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a first, or upper second class honours degree in Physics, or Electrical Engineering / Electronics, or a similar degree that includes instrumentation as major study topics. The ideal candidate will be stimulated by problem solving and have proven practical ability and be able to work in a multidisciplinary team with metallurgists, application engineers and end-users.

Funding:

Applications are open to all candidates.

UK/EU candidates will receive full funding for tuition fees, and there is stipend of £13,290 p.a. minimum over 3 years, which will increase each year at a rate stipulated by the Research Councils UK (RCUK).

Non-UK/EU candidates will receive full funding for tuition fees, however, only a stipend of about £2,500 per year can be offered to such candidates. Please note that overseas students need to demonstrate maintenance funds in the region of £9,000 per year in order satisfy visa requirements, so they will need to obtain additional funding from other sources.

Enquiries:

Informal enquiries about the studentship are welcome by email to a.peyton@manchester.ac.uk or by telephone on 0161 306 8716.

How to Apply:

In the first instance, please send a CV and 1 page accompanying statement to Mrs Marie Davies, Postgraduate (Research) Admissions, email M.B.Davies@manchester.ac.uk quoting the project reference number PhD/EEE/AP/H022937.

Project reference number: PhD/EEE/AP/H022937

Deadline for applications: 11th June 2010
