The ERCIM Fellowship Programme enables young scientists to perform research at ERCIM institutes. The fellowships are available for PhD holders from all over the world.

The objective of the programme is to enable bright young scientists to work collectively on a challenging problem as fellows of leading European research centers. In addition, an ERCIM fellowship helps widen and intensify the network of personal relations and understanding among scientists. The programme offers the opportunity for ERCIM fellows to

  • improve their knowledge about European research structures and networks,
  • familiarize themselves with working conditions in leading European research centres, and
  • promote cross-fertilization and cooperation between research groups working in similar areas in different laboratories, through the fellowships.

Applicants must

  • have a PhD degree (or equivalent) obtained during the last four years prior to the application deadline, or be in the last year of the thesis work with an outstanding academic record and have completed the PhD before starting the grant,
  • be fluent in English, and
  • be discharged or get deferment from military service.

Only ERCIM members can host fellows. A candidate cannot be hosted by a member institute if, by the start of the fellowship, the candidate has already worked in this institute for a total of six months or more during the last three years.

The fellowships are of 18 months’ duration. The fellow will receive a monthly allowance for the whole period of 18 months, which will vary depending on the country (the range is €500 in the Czech Republic to €3,050 in Norway). Costs for traveling to and from the institutes will be paid, but not moving expenses.
