PhD Scholarship in University of Nottingham, UK in Electronic Health Databases

Job Description: Applications are invited for the above PhD studentship funded by the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) based in the UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies (UKCTCS) – see: http://www.ukctcs.org for details, in the Division of Epidemiology & Public Health at The University of Nottingham. As part of a series of national infrastructure programmes enabling the linkage of electronic health (e-health) records, the ESRC is working in close partnership with other national research funders to invest in capacity building of novel research methodology in the area of e-health.

The student will join a group of researchers with a long-standing research track record using large population cohorts and complex databases such as the General Practice Research Database (GPRD) and The Health Improvement Network (THIN) general practice database, to conduct studies in disease aetiology, pharmacoepidemiology and drug safety. The successful student will develop new methodology to maximise the use of established e-health databases and to combine different electronic data sources in conjunction with ongoing UKCTCS projects and projects within the ‘Joint Initiative in Electronic Patient Records and Databases in Research’ stream funded by the Wellcome Trust, Medical Research Council, ESRC and Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council.

Students must have a degree qualification (or equivalent) in epidemiology, medical statistics, public health, mathematics, databasing or any other subject with a numerical focus relevant to health research or equivalent experience gained through employment in a subject relevant to this studentship. Students are strongly advised to contact Dr LJ Tata (Email: Laila.Tata@Nottingham.ac.uk) for further details on this project and to discuss the requirements prior to submitting an application.

This PhD will use an established database of over 400,000 maternal-child linked general practice records. The student will assess the extent to which occurrence of overall and system-specific major and minor congenital malformations are associated with maternal and socio-demographic factors. Survival and health consequences of specific congenital malformations will be quantified on a population level.

The successful student will register for a PhD from October 2010 and will receive a tax-free stipend of £12,940 per annum (this will increase annually in line with the national minimum stipend rate) payment of tuition fees, and an allowance for travel/conference attendance for a period of three years. Stipends may only be paid to students who are UK resident or EU students meeting standard ESRC eligibility requirements. Fees-only awards will be provided for eligible EU students who do not satisfy the basic residential eligibility requirements.

Students should send (preferably by Email) a detailed CV, together with a letter of application and the names and contact details of two referees, to Mr C Butterworth, Centre Administrator for the UKCTCS, Room B103, Division of Epidemiology and Public Health, Clinical Sciences Building, City Hospital, Hucknall Road, Nottingham, NG5 1PB. Email: Craig.Butterworth@Nottingham.ac.uk. Students should cite the title of the project in all communications.

This is a re-advertisement – previous students need not apply.
Closing Date: 18 august 2010
