Job Description: Fellowship for Korean Language Training is designed to enhance competency in Korean language among overseas Korean Studies scholars, graduate students and professionals in Korea-related fields, by providing an opportunity to undertake intensive language training in a Korean language program at the leading universities in Korea.
Eligibility : Basic qualifications and academic background are as follows:
Graduate students who are majoring or minoring in Korea-related subjects for master’s or doctoral degrees;
Faculty members and researchers engaged in teaching or research activities at universities or research institutes; or
Professionals with cultural/artistic organizations related with Korea
(e.g., museum curators, librarians, government officials in charge of Korean affairs, etc.)
Notes
- Applicants must have a basic knowledge of and an ability to communicate in the Korean language (intermediate level preferred).
- For Korean nationals, only those with foreign permanent residency status are eligible to apply.
- Number of fellows varies based on the Foundation’s annual budget.
Ineligibility
Individuals in the following circumstances are not eligible:
Those majoring in the natural sciences, medicine or engineering;
Those already in Korea for their study or research;
Those seeking to enroll in regular degree courses in Korea; or
Those awarded a Fellowship for Korean Language Training within the past two years.
Grant/Fellowship Terms and Amount
Monthly stipend
- Master’s degree and below: 1,000,000 Won
- Doctoral candidates and above: 1,200,000 Won
Settling-in Allowance: 300,000 Won (one-time benefit)
Tuition for Korean Language Course
Travellers’ Insurance: Reimbursement for medical expenses incurred due to illness or accidents in Korea during the grant period.
Notes
Airfare for fellows to travel to and from Korea will not be paid or reimbursed.
Grant/Fellowship Period
Six months or so (a three- to six-month extension is possible for those who achieve good grades.)
Application Procedure
Application Materials
Completed Application Form (supplied by the Foundation)
Curriculum Vitae (applicant’s own form)
Two Letters of Reference, One from the head of the applicant’s organization;
- Graduate students: Chairperson of the department, advisor professor, etc.
- Faculty members/professionals: University president, school dean, museum director, president of research institute, etc.
* One from a Korean language instructor: professor or instructor of Korean language who is able to evaluate the applicant’s language proficiency
Certificate of Most Recent Academic Degree
Evidence of Current Employment or Enrollment at an Institution
Undergraduate/Graduate School Transcripts (not essential for faculty members and professionals)
Evidence of Language Proficiency : Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) or Korean Language Proficiency Test (KLPT) results, records of Korean courses completed at a university, etc.
? Note: If the applicants’ country will not conduct both tests(TOPIK, KLPT), the evidence of Korean languae proficiency(Based on TOPIK) assessed by a professor or instructor of Korean language will be replaceable.
• Application Preparation Instructions
The required materials for the application must be written in Korean or English, or include a Korean or English translation.
The application form must be typed or printed clearly by the applicant, while other hand-in materials must be typed.
• Application Submission
All the required materials for the application must be submitted by postal mail.
The application form may be submitted in advance by e-mail to language@kf.or.kr.
Deadline Date
July 31 of the year preceding the desired fellowship year
Screening
September of the year preceding the desired fellowship year
Notification of the Grant
October of the year preceding the desired fellowship year (individually notified via postal mail)
Submission of Report
Final Report Requirements
Fellowship recipients are required to submit a report which briefly describes their language training experience on a form provided by the Foundation before the conclusion of their grant period.
Obligations
During their grant period, fellows are required to reside in Korea and undertake their fellowship projects on a full-time basis without engaging in any improper activities, including gainful employment.
Fellows may not receive support from other programs administered by the Korea Foundation or any grants from other organizations during the period of their Korea Foundation Fellowship.
Fellowship participation may not be deferred to the following year or beyond.
Please note:
Applications that do not satisfy the listed program eligibility requirements may be excluded from the screening process.
Failure to submit complete application forms or required materials may disqualify an application without any prior notice.
Applications that arrive after the deadline (July 31) will not be processed for screening.
Submitted applications and attached documents will not be returned after the submission.
