German Egyptian Research Short Term Scholarships-GERSS

German Egyptian Research Short Term Scholarships-GERSS : In the context of the German Egyptian Year of Science & Technology 2007, a Cooperation Agreement has been signed between the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MHESR) and the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, Bonn (DAAD) in order to finance short term scholarships for young Egyptian Scientists to travel to Germany The target groups of the program are researchers enrolled in MSc, PhD programs and young Post Doctoral candidates. The scholarships may be awarded for a period from three to six months.
1. Purpose:
Each year a group of researchers will be sent to Germany for Masters, Doctoral and Post doctoral studies in the fields agreed upon by both parties. The distribution of the monthly units will be defined by a bi-national independent selection committee according to the proposals presented by the candidates. This distribution may change annually if both parties agree. The number of months granted for each candidate should not exceed six months and should not be less than three months. Scholarships are not extendable.
The scholarship shall enable advanced graduate students to pursue part of their Masters, Doctoral or Post Doctoral research by enabling them to carry out a specific research project at German universities, archives, libraries or research institutes.
2. Eligibility:
• Applicants must be currently affiliated with an Egyptian university or an Egyptian Research Institute.
• Applicants should not have been granted DAAD or MHESR grants within the past three years.
• Graduates: shouldn’t be older than 26 years
• PhD candidates: shouldn’t exceed 36 years. However priority will be given to young scientists.
• Post doc candidates shouldn’t be older than 40 years.
Final selection of the candidates will be based on:
• Excellent Research proposal
• Study Achievements
• Good command of English (preference will be given to holders of TOEFL (minimum of 550 points paper based, 213 points computer-based, 79-80 internet based) or IELTS (band6) certificate.) Knowledge of the German Language is a plus
• Type of Study / research visit (Candidates in medical science can only be supported if they intend to visit
Germany for research purposes due to the complicated procedure regarding the medical license).
• Number of years passed since the last higher degree. Candidates must participate in the German language Course which will be prepared in cooperation with the Goethe Institute in Egypt. On a general basis, priority will be given to the following fields without excluding any other fields: water, renewable energies, medical sciences, material sciences, biotechnology, social sciences and humanities.
3. Stipend:
• Post Doctoral scholarship holders will be granted an amount of Euro 1951 (one thousand nine hundred fifty one Euros) per month.
• Doctoral scholarship holders will be granted an amount of EUR 1058 (one thousand and fifty eight Euros) per month.
• Additionally a lump sum of 525 Euro will be granted as a travel allowance. Insurance amounts covering health, accident and liability insurance will be deducted from the monthly stipend of each scholarship holder.
4. Application procedure:
Pre-selection application forms can be filled out electronically as of the 15th of October and prior to the 30th of November (Autumn Call) and as of the 15th of March and prior to the 30th April (Spring Call) on the GERSS Website http://www.mhesr-initiatives.org/gerss. Applications received after the deadlines and incomplete applications will not be considered.
